Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Shape warm-up. Display the opening visual in the shape mystery introduction: a photograph or collage containing hidden circles, triangles, squares and rectangles. Students silently spot shapes, then share one shape and where they found it.

  2. 5–12 min · Review together. Use the shape review slides to show one familiar shape at a time in varied sizes and orientations. Students say the name, trace the outline in the air and describe what they notice; reinforce that turning or resizing a shape does not change its name. Prompt with: “What makes you think it is a triangle?” and “Which parts are straight or curved?”

  5. 32–39 min · Shape sort and explain. Display the sorting challenge in the sorting challenge slide. Give pairs a mixed collection of classroom shape cut-outs or foam shapes. Students sort them by one feature, such as colour, size or shape, then change the sorting rule. Invite two pairs to explain: “We put these together because…” Emphasise that a collection can be sorted in more than one sensible way.

  6. 39–45 min · Review and exit check. Revisit the final prompts in the plenary slides. Students complete a quick oral exit check: name the shape shown, describe one feature, and identify a shape in a familiar object. Collect worksheets and note which students can name shapes independently, describe a feature and give a reason.
