Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Welcome and safety check. Open with the hook and learning intention slides and show a collection of everyday objects, such as a plate, book, sign and toy block. Students turn and talk about the shapes they can see; the teacher checks each brought object is safe, clean, small enough to handle and not valuable or breakable. Keep any unsuitable object beside the teacher and use a photograph or verbal description instead.

  2. 5–10 min · Shape language recap. Use the shape recap slides to review circle, triangle, square and rectangle. The teacher models: “This plate is not a flat circle, but its face has a circle shape”; students trace an imaginary outline with a finger and practise saying, “I can see a ___ because it has ___.”

  3. 10–15 min · Model show and tell. Demonstrate with one object, thinking aloud: “I brought a book. The front is a rectangle. I can see four straight sides and four corners. I chose it because the cover has a rectangle shape.” Students identify the shape and suggest one reason. Briefly clarify that an object may contain more than one shape.

  4. 15–30 min · Small-group show and tell. Arrange students in five groups of five. Give each student approximately two minutes to show the object, name the shape, describe one feature and explain their choice. Peers use the prompts on the shape show-and-tell recording sheet to draw or mark the shape they heard and record one describing word; students may dictate their response to an adult or peer. Circulate, prompt complete sentences and photograph or sketch objects that cannot be handled.

  5. 30–37 min · Class shape sort. Invite groups to place or point to their objects in four classroom areas labelled circle, triangle, square and rectangle. Use the sorting discussion slides to ask: “Where should this object go? What is your evidence?” Students help sort objects, noticing that colour, size or orientation does not change the shape. If an object includes several shapes, students may place it in more than one group or explain which part they are describing.

  6. 37–42 min · Share and compare. Select four or five varied objects for a whole-class discussion. Students compare two objects using sentence frames: “Both have a ___ shape”; “This shape is different because ___.” The teacher records children’s observations, accepting informal language while modelling precise terms such as side, corner, straight and curved.

  7. 42–45 min · Exit reflection. Complete the final prompt on the shape show-and-tell recording sheet: students draw an object in the classroom and circle or tell an adult its shape. Invite two students to share. Preview that next lesson they will use familiar shapes to create and explain a picture.
