Lesson structure (45 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Shape noticing hook. Display the opening shape mystery slide showing a familiar object made from several 2D shapes, such as a toy vehicle or house. Ask, “What shapes can you see, and how do you know?” Students silently look, then share one shape and its evidence with a partner.

  2. 5–12 min · Explicit teaching and modelling. Use the shape naming and sorting slides to revisit circle, triangle, square and rectangle, modelling how to look at sides, corners and edges rather than the shape’s colour or position. Sort four large example shapes into a “straight edges” group and a “curved edge” group, thinking aloud: “This circle has no straight sides; it has a curved edge.” Students use their fingers to trace edges in the air and repeat the shape names.

  3. 12–17 min · Guided sort. Place a mixed collection of large shape cards where everyone can see them and return to the first sorting question slide. Invite students to suggest a sorting rule, such as “shapes with 3 sides” and “shapes without 3 sides”. Sort together, checking each shape by counting sides and corners. Students show thumbs up, sideways or down to indicate whether they agree, and explain one decision.

  4. 17–30 min · Shape sorting stations. Organise 25 students into five groups of five, with each group receiving a mixed set of safe, large 2D shape cards or foam shapes. Display the station instruction slide and have groups complete two sorts: first by a teacher-specified property, then by a property they choose. Students physically place shapes into hoops or labelled spaces, count sides and discuss whether any shape could fit in more than one group. Circulate and ask, “What is your sorting rule?”, “How do you know?” and “Could you sort these shapes another way?”

  5. 30–37 min · Record and explain. Distribute the shape sorting record sheet to each student. Students draw or glue one example from each group, circle or copy the sorting rule using available picture prompts, and complete a simple sentence such as “I sorted by ___.” Students who need support may work with an adult or dictate their explanation.

  6. 37–42 min · Share and compare. Bring students together and show the compare-and-explain discussion slide. Invite two groups to present different sorting rules. Emphasise that the same shape collection can be sorted in more than one sensible way, provided the rule is clear. Students compare their group’s sort with another group’s sort and identify one similarity or difference.

  7. 42–45 min · Exit check. Display the final shape challenge slide showing three familiar shapes. Ask students to choose one shape, name it, and tell a partner one property. Collect the completed shape sorting record sheet as students leave, checking whether each student has named or represented a shape and given a reason for its group.
