Teaching Instructions

I need a lesson plan on year 9 PASS fundamental movement skills. They have previously completed 2 worksheets on an overarm throw and two handed strike. There are 10 more fundamental moveemtn skills. The worksheets consisted of what the skill is, what sports the skill is used in, key coaching points and ideal model as well as skill aquisition stages. I want the lesson to be engaging and can focus on any of the 12 fundamental movement skills

Overview

Students analyse the vertical jump and catch through diagrams, written scenarios, video analysis and discussion. They identify and explain the phases of preparation, countermovement, take-off, flight, reaching and catching, landing and balance. Students examine force production, coordination, safety and common errors, then justify how technique and feedback can improve performance without performing the activity physically.

Lesson structure (50 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and learning intention. Teacher displays two contrasting vertical jump and catch sequences and asks, “Which technique is more effective and why?” Students make an initial written prediction and identify what they already know about jumping, reaching, catching and landing safely.

  2. 5–12 min · Phase diagram analysis. Teacher introduces an annotated sequence showing preparation, countermovement, take-off, flight, reaching/catching and landing. In pairs, students label missing phases and identify one technique point or safety consideration for each.

  3. 12–20 min · Technique and error discussion. Teacher models analysis using the prompts “What happened?”, “Why did it happen?” and “How could it improve?” Students examine diagrams, short teacher-selected video clips or written scenarios to identify force production, coordination, timing, balance and common errors such as poor preparation, weak countermovement, mistimed reach, unsafe landing or loss of balance.

  4. 20–35 min · Scenario and video analysis. In groups, students analyse three vertical jump and catch scenarios showing different take-off, flight, reaching/catching and landing techniques. For each, they identify strengths and errors, explain the movement principles involved, recommend a safe correction and justify how the correction could improve performance.

  5. 35–44 min · Written/pair application task. Students complete a performance-analysis task: label the phases, explain two technique components, identify one safety consideration or common error, and propose a feedback-based practice or improvement plan. Partners review responses using a success-criteria checklist.

  6. 44–50 min · Formative assessment and reflection. Students complete an exit ticket: label the phases of the vertical jump and catch, explain how countermovement contributes to force production, identify one common error and safety correction, and describe how coordination or feedback can improve performance. Teacher reviews responses to identify next teaching points.
