Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and retrieval. Teacher displays two contrasting floor plans in the spatial design introduction deck: one attractive but difficult to move through, and one plain but highly functional. Students complete a quick think-pair-share: “Which space would work better for a real user, and what evidence supports your view?”

  2. 5–17 min · Explicit teaching. Teacher uses the spatial design introduction deck to define and illustrate the six principles:

  • Scale: the size of spaces and objects in relation to people and one another
  • Circulation: how users move safely and efficiently through a space
  • Ergonomics: designing for comfort, reach, posture and ease of use
  • Function: how well the space supports its intended purpose
  • Accessibility: enabling people with varied physical and sensory needs to use the space
  • Aesthetics: how colour, form, texture, light and composition affect visual appeal Teacher models a short analysis of a Sweet Home 3D plan, identifying evidence rather than simply describing what is visible. Students annotate key terms and ask clarifying questions.
  1. 17–25 min · Digital demonstration. Teacher opens a prepared Sweet Home 3D model and revisits the spatial design introduction deck for the demonstration prompts. The teacher shows how a plan view, dimensions, furniture placement and three-dimensional view communicate different information. Students predict how a teenager, a wheelchair user or a client commissioning the design might interpret the same plan.

  2. 25–43 min · Paired analysis. Teacher distributes the spatial design analysis worksheet and assigns pairs one of two prepared floor plans shown in the deck. Students complete the final section of the spatial design analysis worksheet: “The most important spatial design principle for my user is … because …” and “One change I would make is …”. Teacher collects worksheets to inform the next lesson’s digital modelling work.
