Teaching Instructions

My school has purchased Canva and it is expected that you will use these with your class. The Canva tool is new to me and my students. Develop a lesson plan on how to teach year 6 students how to use this tool to create a poster on the following dot point from the stage 3 NSW science and technology syllabus (2024): Observe behavioural and structural adaptations of plants and animals, and suggest how these may help them survive in their environments. This dot point comes from the outcome: Knowledge of our world and beyond inspires sustainable solutions ST3-SCI-01 uses evidence to explain how scientific knowledge can be used to develop sustainable practices. Assume that we don't know anything about my students' digital literacy skills & knowledge.

Overview

Students observe how plants and animals have behavioural and structural adaptations that help them survive in environments. They then use Canva to design a science poster that explains an adaptation and links evidence to how scientific knowledge can support sustainable practices.

Learning intentions

Students will:

  • Identify behavioural and structural adaptations of plants and animals in specific environments
  • Use evidence (observations, provided facts, class discussion) to explain how adaptations help survival
  • Suggest how this knowledge could support sustainable practices
  • Create and edit a poster in Canva using clear layout, headings and captions

Success criteria

Students can:

  • Name one structural and one behavioural adaptation and describe what it helps the organism do
  • Explain how the adaptation increases survival in its environment using evidence
  • Produce a Canva poster with a clear title, organised sections and accurate scientific information
  • Use Canva tools (templates, text, images, alignment, spacing, exporting) with growing independence

Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook (observe & predict). Teacher displays the introduction slides and shows two contrasting animal images (e.g., desert vs rainforest) while asking: “What might these features help the animal do to survive?” Students turn-and-talk, then share one idea.

  2. 5–12 min · Set the learning path. Teacher uses the introduction slides to introduce behavioural vs structural adaptations with quick examples, and models vocabulary on the board: behavioural, structural, survive, environment. Students copy a mini word list and underline the two categories in a class example.

  3. 12–22 min · Guided science thinking (evidence for survival). Teacher explains a simple evidence chain: Adaptation → Advantage → Survival in environment, using the introduction slides prompt questions (“What evidence do we see or know?” “What is the survival advantage?”). Students complete a brief oral “because” statement for one example provided by the teacher.

  4. 22–28 min · Canva teaching (whole class, step-by-step). Teacher opens the introduction slides to the Canva demo slides and models logging in, choosing a poster design, and setting up margins/space for title and sections. Students mirror the steps on their devices (or shared tablet) and do not start content yet.

  5. 28–40 min · Independent creation (Poster 1st draft). Teacher circulates with the success checklist shown on the introduction slides and prompts: “Include: title, organism, structural adaptation, behavioural adaptation, evidence, survival explanation, sustainable link.” Students create their Canva poster draft using a template, add text boxes, and insert 1–2 images (teacher-provided image folder or classroom favourites). Students use Canva alignment/spacing tools so the poster looks organised.

  6. 40–48 min · Evidence & sustainability check (teacher conference rounds). Teacher uses the introduction slides to ask a quick quality check: “Does your survival explanation use evidence?” and “How could this knowledge support sustainable practices (e.g., habitat protection, resource use, farming choices)?” Students do a self-check and revise one section (e.g., rewrite a sentence to include “because”).

  7. 48–56 min · Peer review (gallery walk with feedback). Teacher displays the introduction slides peer-feedback sentence starters: “I can see…”, “Your evidence explains…”, “Consider adding…”. Students rotate in pairs or small groups, leaving one constructive suggestion each.

  8. 56–60 min · Plenary (export & share). Teacher instructs students to export/save their Canva poster (PDF or PNG) and invites 2–3 volunteers to read their sustainable practice sentence from the introduction slides. Students submit and provide a final quick thumbs check: “Adaptation category correct / evidence included / sustainability linked.”
