Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook and retrieval. Open with the hook and retrieval slides showing two contrasting images of a farm or wool-production system: one with exposed soil, waste and high water use, and one using ground cover, composting and careful water management. Students silently record one difference, then share what they remember about managed environments from previous lessons.

  2. 5–15 min · Explicit teaching and modelling. Use the teaching slides to introduce the terms input, process, output, impact and sustainable choice. Teacher models the first section of the production systems comparison organiser using a familiar example, such as growing vegetables: inputs include soil, seed, water and tools; processes include planting, watering and harvesting; outputs include food, organic waste and packaging. Think aloud while identifying evidence and distinguishing a fact from an unsupported opinion.

  3. 15–20 min · Group roles and investigation briefing. Display the investigation instructions and criteria and place students in eight mixed-ability groups of four. Give each group the group role cards and allocate roles: reader, evidence finder, recorder and reporter. Explain that groups will compare two methods and must use at least three pieces of evidence before recommending one.

  4. 20–42 min · Guided group investigation. Distribute the production systems comparison organiser and provide each group with one teacher-prepared scenario pair, such as:

  • vegetable growing with synthetic fertiliser compared with compost, mulch and crop rotation
  • cotton production with high water use compared with efficient irrigation and soil-cover practices
  • wool production with unmanaged grazing compared with planned grazing and protection of waterways
  • food production using single-use packaging compared with reusable or recyclable packaging.

Students read the pre-filled information, highlight evidence about resources and impacts, and complete the organiser. Teacher rotates between groups, prompting: “What evidence supports that idea?”, “Who or what is affected?”, and “What could be changed to reduce the impact?” Provide guided support rather than allowing groups to guess.

  1. 42–53 min · Evidence-based reporting and class comparison. Each group gives a one-minute recommendation using the frame, “We recommend ___ because ___ and ___. This would improve sustainability by ___.” Students listen for evidence and record one useful idea from another group on their organiser. Teacher builds a class comparison chart on the board under the headings soil, water, waste, energy, biodiversity and people.

  2. 53–60 min · Plenary and exit check. Return to the review and exit-question slides. Students complete the final box on the production systems comparison organiser: “The most sustainable choice in our investigation was ___ because ___.” Invite two or three responses, then collect organisers for assessment.
