Lesson Overview
This 50-minute lesson for Prep students focuses on developing teamwork, cooperation, and communication through active, team-based physical activities. It is Lesson 8 of 9 in the "Rhythms of Movement" unit, designed to apply previously learned fundamental movement and rhythmic skills in group challenges, fostering social interaction and respectful collaboration.
Curriculum Alignment
Victorian Curriculum Health and Physical Education (HPE) Prep Level
Content Descriptions:
- ACPMP018 — Practice personal and social skills when participating in physical activities (e.g., communicating, cooperating and negotiating with others).
- ACPMP019 — Explore and combine fundamental movement skills with objects and others in a variety of movement sequences and situations.
Achievement Standard:
By the end of Prep, students describe how their body feels when active, use equipment safely, and participate in games that involve others, cooperating and sharing equipment.
Learning Goals (WALT)
We Are Learning To:
- Work cooperatively in teams to complete physical challenges using movement and communication.
- Apply movements and rhythmic skills from previous lessons in group activities.
- Communicate clearly with teammates to achieve common goals.
Success Criteria (I can…)
- I can listen and talk with my team to decide what to do.
- I can work with my teammates to complete the challenge.
- I can show fair play by sharing and encouraging others.
Equipment Needed
- Soft balls (beach balls or soft foam balls)
- Beanbags or small scarves (to pass or move)
- Cones or markers to designate zones
- Colour-coded team bibs or bands for 4 teams of 5 students
- Music player for rhythmic warm-up
Lesson Structure
1. Retrieval Warm-up (7 minutes)
Activity: "Rhythm Relay"
- Students form 4 teams at starting lines.
- Each team practices a simple rhythmic clapping pattern they learned previously (e.g., clap, stomp, clap).
- On signal, one student runs to a cone and back keeping the rhythm with claps, then tags the next player.
- Teacher prompts: "Remember the rhythms we practised — keep the beat as you move and cheer your friends!"
- Purpose: physically warms up, recalls rhythm and coordination skills, promotes excitement for team activity.
2. Goals (4 minutes)
- Teacher gathers students; clearly states WALT and success criteria in simple language.
- Establish behaviour expectations: listening ears, kind words, gentle hands, safe play zones.
- Introduce Spanish key vocabulary naturally:
- Equipo (team), cooperar (cooperate), comunicar (communicate), respetar (respect).
3. Learning: I Do – We Do – You Do (15 minutes total)
I Do (5 minutes):
- Teacher models a simple team challenge: pass a beanbag around the team circle using only feet or elbows without dropping it.
- Demonstrate clear communication: saying “¡Aquí!” (Here!) to get a teammate's attention.
- Highlight safety and working together kindly.
We Do (5 minutes):
- Teams try beanbag passing with support.
- Teacher roams, asks: "How can your team help each other?" "What can you say if your friend needs the beanbag?"
- Give immediate positive feedback and guidance.
You Do (5 minutes):
- Teams complete a modified challenge: relay passing of a ball or scarf between team members while moving through a course marked with cones.
- Reduce teacher prompts, allowing teams to organise and communicate themselves.
4. Consolidation Game (18 minutes)
Team Challenge Circuit:
Set up 3 stations - each a cooperative task requiring communication and teamwork:
- Beanbag Balance: Pass and balance a beanbag on teammates’ heads while moving slowly through a course.
- Rhythm Passing: Using a soft ball, pass it to the beat of a simple song, encouraging timing and teamwork.
- Cooperation Cone Navigation: Teams carry a large scarf or towel supporting a ball together through cones to a finish line.
- Teams spend 5-6 minutes at each station rotating.
- Teacher observes, offers differentiated support:
- Support: simplify task; e.g., passing ball with hands only.
- Extension: add rhythmic clapping pattern between passes or add Spanish commands like "¡Vamos!" (Let's go!), "¡Espera!" (Wait!).
- Emphasise encouragement and communication.
5. Show Me What You Know (5 minutes)
- Gather to reflect briefly in pairs or small groups.
- Prompts:
- "How did your team work together?"
- "What did you say to help your friend?"
- Invite some sharing to whole class.
- Teacher links back to success criteria: listening, cooperating, communicating, respecting.
- Close by acknowledging effort and teamwork.
Differentiation Strategies
- Use visual cues and modelling for students needing extra support.
- Pair students carefully to promote inclusion and peer support.
- Simplify tasks or equipment if needed (e.g., bigger ball, fewer cones).
- Provide verbal prompts before and during activities.
- For advanced learners, add rhythmic chanting in Spanish while performing tasks or add small decision-making choices (e.g., which route to take).
Behaviour and Safety
- Explicitly teach boundaries and safe interaction (no pushing or grabbing).
- Encourage “buen trabajo” (good job) to promote positive interactions.
- Use clear signals to monitor transitions and quiet listening (e.g., clapping pattern to gather attention).
- Teacher maintains active supervision to ensure safety at all times.
This lesson uses structured, movement-based team challenges integrated with rhythmic coordination and communication, reflecting the Victorian Curriculum PE guidelines for Prep. It promotes social skills, inclusion, and bilingual vocabulary naturally, designed for specialists and CRTs alike to implement easily with minimal downtime and maximum student engagement. The lesson also aligns with the "Rhythms of Movement" unit focus on cooperation and group problem-solving in physical contexts, providing clear progression towards effective teamwork.
