Think aloud while identifying the purpose, variables, procedure, participants, recording method and success threshold. Emphasise changing one factor at a time, using the same instructions for each tester, collecting evidence from more than one user and respecting privacy and safety. Students help improve a deliberately unreliable test, recording suggestions on the design testing and evidence worksheet.
25–43 min · Individual test-planning task. Distribute the design testing and evidence worksheet and direct students to select their current project or a provided design scenario. They write one criterion and a planned test for each of at least four areas. For every test, students record: what will be tested, who or what will provide evidence, the procedure, the evidence to collect, the success threshold and one safety or sustainability consideration. Students may refer to the prototype testing feedback template for the structure of a formal criterion-based test and action plan.
43–53 min · Peer critique and revision. Students work in pairs to review plans using the prompts on the peer-review and discussion slides: “Is the test fair?”, “What evidence will prove the criterion was met?”, “Could the result be repeated?” and “Does it consider safety and sustainability?” Partners give one specific strength and one improvement. Students revise at least one test and highlight the change on their worksheet.
53–60 min · Plenary and exit check. Return to the plenary slides and ask students to share examples of strong evidence. Students complete the final worksheet prompt: “The most important improvement to my testing plan is … because …”. Invite two or three responses, then collect worksheets to inform the practical testing session.
