Lesson structure (60 minutes)

  1. 0–5 min · Hook. Teacher displays the opening question in the Thingiverse introduction deck: “If someone uploads a 3D model online, can anyone do whatever they want with it?” Students make an initial individual choice—yes, no or unsure—and briefly justify it.

  2. 5–15 min · Explore the platform. Teacher uses the Thingiverse introduction deck to explain Thingiverse as a repository of user-created digital models, highlighting model descriptions, creator names, remixes, downloads and licence information without requiring students to access the live site. Students annotate the Thingiverse and attribution worksheet by recording two possible benefits and two possible risks of using shared models.

  3. 15–27 min · Direct teach: ownership and licences. Teacher explains copyright, Creative Commons, attribution, remixing and the difference between inspiration and copying, using the licence examples and attribution model in the Thingiverse introduction deck. Students complete the matching and short-answer section of the Thingiverse and attribution worksheet, including what information a responsible attribution should contain: creator, model title, source, licence and any changes made.

  4. 27–42 min · Scenario investigation. Teacher places students in pairs and displays four scenarios from the Thingiverse introduction deck: downloading a model for personal printing; modifying and sharing a model; using a model image in a school presentation; and selling a printed object. Students use the licence information supplied on the Thingiverse and attribution worksheet to decide whether each action is allowed, conditionally allowed or not allowed, then justify one decision with evidence.

  5. 42–53 min · Responsible design discussion. Teacher facilitates a class discussion using the prompts in the Thingiverse introduction deck: “How can a designer acknowledge another person’s work?”, “When does remixing become a new design?”, and “What should you do if a file contains personal information, unsafe instructions or offensive content?” Students share decisions and propose a responsible-use checklist covering respect, integrity, safety, privacy, sustainability and excellence.

  6. 53–60 min · Plenary and exit response. Teacher returns to the hook question in the Thingiverse introduction deck and asks students to revise their original answer. Students complete the final response on the Thingiverse and attribution worksheet: “A responsible Year 9 designer using a shared digital model should…” followed by one example of correct attribution and one online-safety action.
