They will collaboratively plan a podcast series that discusses key themes from the diary texts studied during the unit. The lesson focuses on developing students’ skills in planning oral presentations, understanding audience, and exploring thematic ideas critically and creatively.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Understand the purpose and structure of podcasts as a medium of storytelling and discussion.
- Identify key themes from the diary texts studied in the unit and consider how to explore these themes orally.
- Collaboratively plan episode outlines for a class podcast series.
- Use clear and appropriate language for an intended audience, reflecting empathy and insight into courageous voices and resilience.

Lesson Structure
1. Introduction to Podcasts (10 minutes)
- Teacher Explanation: Briefly introduce the podcast format (audio storytelling, interviews, discussions), highlighting its growing popularity and relevance as a modern communication tool.
- Examples: Play a 1-2 minute audio clip from an age-appropriate podcast episode (could relate to history, diary entries, or resilience), demonstrating tone, style, and structure.
- Discussion Prompt: Ask students, "How could a podcast be a good way to share the voices of courage and resilience from the diaries we have studied?"
- Link to Unit Themes: Emphasise that podcasts allow people to tell personal stories and share emotional and courageous experiences, aligning with their unit focus.
2. Exploring Themes from the Diaries (10 minutes)
- Group Discussion: In small groups (4-5 students), students discuss and list the main themes they’ve identified from the diary texts so far (e.g., courage in adversity, hope, resilience, identity).
- Reporting Back: Each group shares a key theme with the class and why they think it is important to include in the podcast.
- Teacher Synthesis: Collate themes visibly for the class (whiteboard/flipchart), highlighting connections and diversity of themes.
3. Planning Podcast Episodes (20 minutes)
- Collaborative Task: With the whole class, brainstorm the structure of the podcast series. Decide:
- Number of episodes (recommend 3-5)
- Episode titles relating to themes (e.g., "Courage in Crisis," "Voices of Hope")
- Types of content: stories from the diaries, reflective discussions, interviews (could be role-plays)
- Episode Outline: In groups, students create a simple episode plan template including:
- Episode title
- Main theme
- Key points or stories to cover
- Format ideas (e.g., discussion, monologue, interview)
- Encourage Creativity: Suggest using sound effects, music intros, and personal reflections to enrich the podcast episodes.
4. Reflection and Homework (5 minutes)
- Class Reflection: Discuss how creating podcasts might help them understand and express resilience and courage in new ways.
- Homework/Extension: Each student writes a short reflection on which podcast episode they would be most interested in contributing to and why, preparing for episode scripting in the next lesson.
Resources Required
- Audio clip from a suitable podcast (pre-selected by teacher)
- Whiteboard/Smartboard/flipchart to record themes and plans
- Worksheet for episode planning template (printed or digital)
- Pens or digital devices for group work
Assessment
Formative assessment throughout:
- Observation of group discussions and participation
- Evaluation of episode outlines for relevance, creativity, and understanding of themes
- Reflection writing to assess individual engagement and interpretive skills
Differentiation Strategies
- Provide sentence starters or prompts for students less confident in oral discussion or writing.
- Offer extension tasks such as researching podcast production roles or creating a script excerpt.
- Allow students to choose episode topics suited to their interests and strengths.
This lesson positions students to actively engage with the unit themes using a dynamic and contemporary medium, deepening their comprehension and communication skills in an empowering, student-centred way.
