Word Building

Overview

Students will practise spelling new and tricky words by using known word parts (base words, prefixes/suffixes) and spelling generalisations. They will apply these strategies to words connected to Tiny Timmy Playing Up.

Learning intentions

Students will:

• use known base words to spell related words accurately
• apply spelling generalisations when building longer words
• notice how a suffix or word part changes meaning or grammatical form
• proofread and edit their spelling using a checklist

Success criteria

Students can:

• spell at least 8/10 target words correctly during the practice
• explain the base word and one word-part connection for 3 target words
• choose the correct word in a sentence and justify why it fits
• use a proofreading checklist to correct at least one spelling error

Lesson structure (22 minutes total)

1. 0–3 min · Hook (book connection). Teacher shows 3 quick images from Tiny Timmy Playing Up (or reads a short line from the text) and writes: “Timmy _______ (misbehave / misbehaved) because he forgot the rules.” Students turn-and-talk: which word fits and why.
2. 3–8 min · Direct teach (word-part spelling). Teacher models a mini word-build using the board:

• misbehave → misbehaved (add suffix -ed)
• play → playing (change for -ing)
• revision ↔ vision (base word relationship) Teacher explicitly points out: “We keep the base word we recognise, then we add the word part that changes meaning/time.”

3. 8–12 min · Guided practice (build and spell). Teacher distributes a short “Word Builder” sheet with 10 target words pulled from class discussion about Timmy’s actions and feelings (mix of base + suffix/related words). Students complete:

• Circle the base word
• Add the correct suffix/prefix form
• Write the full word neatly Teacher circulates and prompts: “What known word do you hear/see inside this one?”

4. 12–15 min · Strategy check (proofreading with a checklist). Teacher gives a simple checklist on the board:

• Did I keep the base word letters the same?
• Did I use the correct suffix form (-ed, -ing, -ment, -tion)?
• Did I double-check vowels/consonants I often miss? Students trade with a partner and correct one spelling error using the checklist.

5. 15–19 min · Apply (sentence choice with suffix effect). Teacher writes two sentence stems on the board (complex sentence focus):

• “Timmy got into trouble because he was _________ (naughty / naughtier).”
• “He kept the secret even though he felt _________ (uneasy / uneasiness).” Students choose the correct word and rewrite the sentence in their books. Teacher reminds: dependent clause starts with because/even though.

6. 19–22 min · Exit ticket (show the connection). Students complete a quick exit ticket: for 3 selected words, write the base word and one sentence about how the suffix changes meaning (e.g., “-ed tells past”, “-ing tells what is happening”). Teacher collects for marking.

Assessment

• Teacher observation during guided practice: correct use of base words and suffixes
• Partner proofreading: whether students can justify changes using the checklist
• Exit ticket: accuracy of spelling and ability to state how a suffix changes meaning/grammatical form

Differentiation

• Support:
• Provide a word bank of base words and common suffixes (-ed, -ing, -ment, -tion)
• Offer sentence starters using because/even though
• Use colour-coding: base word in one colour, suffix in another
• Extension:
• Challenge students to add one more related word from the same family (e.g., misbehave → misbehaviour)
• Ask students to create an additional complex sentence using a different dependent clause starter
• EAL/SEN:
• Keep instructions short and repeated; read them aloud and show them visually
• Allow oral rehearsal before writing (students speak the base word and suffix first)
• Provide partially completed sentences for those who need reduced writing load
