Calculating Triangle Area: ½ Base × Height
Year 7 Mathematics Understanding the Triangle Area Formula

What is Area?
Area measures the space inside a 2D shape Measured in square units (cm², m², etc.) Think of it as how much paint you'd need to fill the shape Different shapes have different area formulas
Parts of a Triangle
Base: any side of the triangle can be the base Height: the perpendicular distance from base to opposite vertex Height is always at a right angle (90°) to the base Height may fall inside, outside, or on the triangle

The Triangle Area Formula
Area = ½ × base × height or A = ½bh

Let's Calculate Together!
Example 1: Base = 8cm, Height = 6cm A = ½ × 8 × 6 = ½ × 48 = 24cm² Example 2: Base = 10m, Height = 4m A = ½ × 10 × 4 = ½ × 40 = 20m²

Your Turn to Practice!
A triangle has a base of 12cm and height of 5cm What is its area? Show your working using A = ½bh
