Estimate, Calculate, Conquer Maths!
Year 5 Mathematics Estimation & Calculation Review Addition with Decimals, Multiplication & Division
WALT - We Are Learning To...
Estimate answers before calculating Add decimal numbers accurately Use estimation to check multiplication and division Apply estimation strategies in real-world problems
Success Criteria - You will know you've succeeded when you can:
Round numbers to estimate before calculating Explain why your estimate is reasonable Calculate decimal addition correctly Use estimation to spot calculation errors Apply these skills to solve word problems
Estimation is like being a Math Detective!
"A good estimate helps you know if your answer makes sense before you even finish calculating!"
Why Do We Estimate? (I Do - Teacher Modelling)
Saves time in everyday situations Helps us check if answers are reasonable Useful for shopping and budgeting Makes mental maths easier Catches calculation mistakes
Rounding Rules Refresher (I Do)
Look at the digit to the right If it's 5 or more, round up If it's 4 or less, round down Example: 3.7 rounds to 4 Example: 6.2 rounds to 6
Quick Rounding Challenge (We Do - Guided Practice)
Round these numbers to the nearest whole number: 4.3 = ? 7.8 = ? 2.5 = ? 9.1 = ? Show your answer with fingers!
Adding Decimals with Estimation (I Do)
First, estimate: 3.4 + 2.7 Round: 3 + 3 = 6 Now calculate exactly: 3.4 + 2.7 = 6.1 Check: Is 6.1 close to our estimate of 6? ✓ Our answer makes sense!
Estimation Strategies (We Do)
{"left":"Round to nearest whole number\nRound to nearest 10\nUse friendly numbers","right":"Look for patterns\nBreak numbers apart\nAdd the easy parts first"}
Estimation Station Challenge (We Do)
Work with your partner Estimate first, then calculate Problem 1: 5.6 + 3.8 Problem 2: 7.2 + 4.5 Problem 3: 2.9 + 6.7 Check if your answers are reasonable!
Multiplication & Division Estimation (I Do)
Multiplication: 6.8 × 4 ≈ 7 × 4 = 28 Division: 84.6 ÷ 3 ≈ 84 ÷ 3 = 28 Always round to make calculation easier Check: Does the exact answer make sense? Estimation catches big mistakes!
Think-Pair-Share: Real World Estimation
When might you use estimation in real life? Think for 30 seconds Share with your partner Be ready to share with the class!
