Analog Clock Time Practice

Worksheet illustration

WALT: We are learning to read and show time on an analog clock

Success criteria:

- I can place the minute hand correctly for 'minutes past' and 'minutes to'.

- I can place the hour hand in the right position between numbers.

- I can write the time in words and as a digital time (hours:minutes).

Guided practice — Show on your clock and draw

1. Show 20 minutes past 9 on your analog clock. Draw the hands below and write the digital time.
2. Show 25 minutes to 12 on your analog clock. Draw the hands below and write the digital time.
3. Quick check: When the minute hand points to the 3, how many minutes is that? Write your answer.
4. Quick check: When the minute hand points to the 6, how many minutes is that? Write your answer.

✏️ Part 2: Game — "What time am I?" & Teacher observation

Game rules (read aloud): I will call out clues. Show the time on your clock and record it on your whiteboard. Example clue: "I mean 3 o’clock when the hour hand points to me and I mean 15 minutes when the minute hand points to me. What time am I?" (Answer: 3:15).

Play tips: Play several rounds. Prompt students to hold up clocks; give feedback and extra examples as needed.

5. Clue: "I mean 3 when the hour hand points to me and I mean 15 minutes when the minute hand points to me." Show and write the time.
6. Clue: "I mean 9 when the hour hand points to me and I mean 20 minutes when the minute hand points to me." Show and write the time.
7. Clue: "I mean 12 when the hour hand points to me and I mean 25 minutes when the minute hand points to me." Show and write the time.
8. Clue: "I mean 4 when the hour hand points to me and I mean 45 minutes when the minute hand points to me." Show and write the time.

Teacher assessment & notes

Observe and record:

Student placed minute hand correctly

Student placed hour hand correctly (including between numbers)

Student recorded digital time correctly

Anecdotal notes (make notes while students play):

Differentiation

- Support: Give a small 12-hour clock model and guide hand placement step-by-step. Use prompts like "minute hand to 4 means 20 minutes".

- Extension: Ask students to show the time 10 minutes earlier or later than a given time and explain how the hour hand moves.

Dyslexia-friendly reading options

- Read clues aloud and give one clue at a time; show a model clock while reading. Provide coloured overlays or highlight numbers on the clock if helpful.

Reminder: Observe students during this activity for the optional assessment task. Provide feedback and correct misconceptions as they play.
