A Candle

A candle is made of wax with a wick running through its centre. When you light the wick, a flame appears and begins to burn. The heat from the flame melts the wax near the wick, which travels up and feeds the flame. Candles give off a warm, gentle glow. People use candles for light, decoration, and celebration. In Canada, candles are often used during winter holidays and birthday parties. It is important to always have an adult present when a candle is lit, as fire can be dangerous.

6. What are two materials that make up a candle?
7. What happens to the wax when the candle is lit? Use evidence from the passage.
8. Name two occasions mentioned in the passage when Canadians use candles.

✅ Control of Error Card:

Q6: Wax and a wick.  |  Q7: The heat melts the wax near the wick and it travels up to feed the flame.  |  Q8: Winter holidays and birthday parties.
