Lesson Overview

In this lesson, first-class students will explore where zoo animals come from, enhancing their geographic awareness while developing teamwork and individual skills through engaging activities. The lesson will use a PowerPoint presentation to introduce concepts followed by group and individual activities.

Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

Lesson Structure

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Greeting and Attendance: Welcome students and take attendance.
2. Introduction to Topic: Briefly introduce the focus on zoo animals and where they come from.
3. PowerPoint Presentation:
   • Slide 1: Title Slide
   • Slide 2: Importance of Zoos
   • Slide 3: Overview of Animal Habitats
   • Slide 4: Highlight Animals from Different Continents (Africa, Asia, North America, South America, Australia)
   • Slide 5-9: Detail about specific animals (e.g., Lion - Africa, Panda - Asia, Kangaroo - Australia)
   • Slide 10: Fun Fact Slide (e.g., "Did you know that a sloth can hold its breath longer than a dolphin?")

Group Activity (20 minutes)

1. Divide the Class: Split the students into groups of 3-4 (ensure diverse abilities in each group).
2. Animal Placement Activity:
   • Provide each group with a printed world map.
   • Give each group a set of 14 animal images.
   • Students will stick the animal images on their respective countries on the map.
   • Groups are encouraged to discuss among themselves and decide the correct placements.
3. Circulation: Teacher circulates the room to offer support and ask guiding questions about the animals and their habitats.

Individual Activity (15 minutes)

1. Cutting and Sticking:
   • Each student receives one animal image and a piece of construction paper.
   • Students will cut out their animal and glue it onto their construction paper.
   • They will then write down the country where the animal comes from and a fun fact about it.
2. Share and Reflect: After completing the activity, allow a few students to share their work with the class for discussions and reflections.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

1. Recap the Lesson: Summarise what was learned about animals and their countries. Ask students to share one new fact they learned.
2. Homework Suggestion: Encourage students to talk to their families about their favourite zoo animals and where they might come from.

• Group Activity Assessment: Observe group collaboration, discussion, and accuracy of animal placements.
• Individual Activity Assessment: Check finished construction papers for creativity and understanding of animal origins.
