• Small ball or object for ‘Pass the Ball’ speaking game

Lesson Structure

1. Warm-Up & Context Setting (7 minutes)

• Activity: Quick class chat in Gaeilge — "Cad iad do caitheamh aimsire?"
• Teacher writes students’ responses on the board in Gaeilge, correcting gently and introducing new relevant words.
• Show a colourful image slideshow projecting various hobbies common in Ireland and say each word aloud for pronunciation modelling.

2. Vocabulary Introduction (10 minutes)

• Introduce 8 key hobbies using flashcards:
  1. Ag léamh (reading)
  2. Ag imirt peile (playing football)
  3. Ag seinm ceoil (playing music)
  4. Ag rith (running)
  5. Ag díriú (drawing)
  6. Ag snámh (swimming)
  7. Ag úsáid an ríomhaire (using the computer)
  8. Ag féachaint ar an teilifís (watching TV)
• Pronunciation drill: choral repetition followed by individual turns.
• Group students in pairs; one student shows the card and says the word, the other repeats.

3. Listening & Speaking Practice (10 minutes)

• Play a short audio recording or video clip of children talking about their hobbies in Irish (about 1-2 minutes).
• Ask comprehension questions: “Cén chaitheamh aimsire atá sa chluasóg?” (What hobby was in the clip?) — whole class answers verbally.
• Pass the Ball game: Toss a ball to a student who must say one hobby they like in Gaeilge, then pass to another.

4. Focused Sentence Building (8 minutes)

• Teach basic sentence structure:
  • Is maith liom + hobby (I like...)
  • Ní maith liom + hobby (I don’t like...)
• Write sample sentences on board.
• Pair students to practise exchanging sentences asking each other about hobbies.

5. Independent / Group Activity (8 minutes)

• Hand out worksheets with:
  • Matching exercises (match pictures to Gaeilge words).
  • Space to write 2 hobbies they enjoy and 1 they don’t, using Is maith liom... / Ní maith liom....
• Circulate to assist and encourage correct spelling & sentence formation.

6. Plenary & Reflection (2 minutes)

• Invite 3-4 students to share their sentences with the class.
• Summarise the importance of hobbies and encourage them to think about new hobbies for next lesson.
