Teaching Instructions

I want an introduction lesson to weather. It needs to be really basic and aligned to the plc and have an active element. I have a number of EAL students. Please suggest a way to incorporate them too

Exploring Weather Together

Lesson Overview

Duration: 30 minutes
Class Size: 22 students
Subject: Gaeilge (Irish)
Topic: Weather (An Aimsir)
Curriculum Framework: Primary Language Curriculum, Irish Education Standards

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and name different types of weather in Gaeilge (e.g., grian (sun), báisteach (rain), gaoithe (wind), sneachta (snow)).
  2. Use basic phrases to describe the weather (e.g., "Tá sé grianmhar." - It is sunny).
  3. Engage in a fun, collaborative activity that enhances their understanding and use of vocabulary related to weather.

Materials Needed

  • Flashcards with weather vocabulary images (grian, báisteach, gaoithe, sneachta)
  • Large poster board divided into sections for each type of weather
  • Sticky notes in various colours
  • Markers
  • A globe or world map (optional)
  • Weather report template (simple questions for students to fill out)

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Greet the class: Begin by saying, "Dia dhuit!" to engage students.
  • Discuss the Importance of Weather: Ask the question, “Cén t-am den bhliain é?” (What time of year is it?). Explain why discussing the weather is essential in daily life.
  • Introduce Vocabulary: Present the weather vocabulary using flashcards. Show each card and repeat the words, encouraging students to repeat after you. Focus on pronunciation, ensuring EAL students can follow along.

2. Active Learning Activity (15 minutes)

Weather Charades

  • Divide the Class: Split the class into groups of 4-5 students.
  • Explain the Game: Each group will take turns picking a weather flashcard. They must act out the weather without speaking, while other groups guess what it is in Gaeilge.
  • Inclusion of EAL Students: Assign each EAL student a buddy from their group who speaks fluent Gaeilge. This buddy can help them understand the vocabulary and context as they participate.
  • Rotate and Repeat: After 5 minutes, rotate the groups to encourage interaction and collaboration among all students.

3. Group Discussion and Vocabulary Practice (5 minutes)

  • Create a Weather Chart: On the large poster board, start categorizing the students' thoughts on what the weather is like today. Have students affix sticky notes with the corresponding weather vocabulary. For example, if it’s sunny, they will write “grian” on a sticky note and place it under that section.
  • Encourage Sentences: Invite students to use a simple sentence to describe today’s weather, such as "Tá sé grianmhar inniu." (It is sunny today). Ensure all students have a chance to speak.

4. Conclusion (5 minutes)

  • Review Vocabulary: Go through the weather vocabulary once more, this time using the sticky notes on the chart. Ask students to shout out the Irish terms as they see them.
  • Weather Report Activity: Hand out the weather report template. As a class, discuss how the weather changes over the week and ask students to fill in at least two weather terms from today's lesson.
  • Closing: Summarize what was learned and express enthusiasm about the next lesson on seasons, prompting students with "An bhfuil sibh sásta?" (Are you all happy?).

Assessment

  • Formative Assessment: Monitor group participation and ability to name and act out weather types. Take note of EAL students' engagement and understanding through their buddy interactions.
  • Feedback: At the end of the lesson, ask a few students to share their weather report and affirm their effort positively.

Special Considerations

  • The lesson accommodates EAL students by pairing them with more fluent classmates for support.
  • Ensure an inclusive atmosphere where all students, regardless of their language proficiency, feel confident to participate.

Reflection

Post-lesson, assess the effectiveness of the activities and adjust future lessons based on engagement levels and understanding demonstrated by the students. Consider whether students enjoyed the active learning aspect and whether they gained a foundational understanding of weather vocabulary in Gaeilge.
