Key Quotes Exploration

Overview

This 40-minute lesson invites two Year 8 students (Second Year) to engage deeply with the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Following the IE Curriculum framework, the students will develop their skills in textual analysis, comprehension, critical thinking, and oral communication through identifying key quotes from assigned chapters and participating in a Hot Seat activity.

Materials Needed

• Copies of The Outsiders (one per student)
• Notebook and pen for each student
• Whiteboard and markers
• Timer

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

• Brief recap of The Outsiders plot and themes, reinforcing context.
• Explain today’s task: each student will focus on a specific chapter (Teacher assigns: Student A – Chapter 3, Student B – Chapter 5).
• Define “key quote” with examples (quotes that reveal character, theme or conflict).
• Link to learning objectives: highlight importance of understanding deeper meaning behind text and practising speaking skills.

2. Individual Quote Hunting (10 minutes)

• Each student silently reads their assigned chapter.
• Students identify 2-3 key quotes that reveal important ideas or character insights.
• Students write down quotes with brief notes on why they chose them (focus on explicit and implicit meanings).

3. Quote Sharing and Discussion (10 minutes)

• Student A shares their quotes, explaining the significance.
• Student B listens, asks probing questions (e.g., "Why do you think this quote is important to the character?").
• Repeat with Student B’s quotes.
• Teacher to facilitate and scaffold discussion, encouraging use of literary terminology such as “theme”, “characterisation”, “tone”, and “motif” as per IE Curriculum language descriptors.

4. Hot Seat Activity (12 minutes)

• Student A "becomes" a character from their chapter (e.g., Ponyboy or another main character).
• Student B acts as an interviewer, asking questions about feelings, motivations, or reactions linked to the quotes they found.
• Swap roles after 6 minutes.
• Emphasise empathy and use of textual evidence to support responses, fulfilling oral language and interpersonal skills objectives.

5. Reflection and Wrap-Up (3 minutes)

• Quick round: What surprised you about your partner’s chapter? What new insight did you gain?
• Teacher praises use of critical thinking and oral skills.
• Issue a brief home task: choose one more quote from a different chapter and write a paragraph on its importance.

Assessment

• Formative assessment through observation of participation in discussion and Hot Seat.
• Check students’ notes for evidence of understanding explicit/implicit meanings.
• Assess oral communication using criteria:
  • Clarity of explanation
  • Use of textual evidence
  • Engagement with partner’s ideas
  • Empathetic expression of character views

Differentiation

• If a student struggles with written notes, allow use of bullet points or drawing symbols to represent ideas.
• For deeper challenge, ask students to link quotes to broader social themes such as 'class conflict' or 'identity'.

• Encourage students to use IE English conventions in spelling and punctuation.
• The Hot Seat activity builds confidence in public speaking and critical empathy, key competencies in the IE curriculum.
