Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 3 of 3 in the unit "Tense Mastery: Past, Present, Future". Lesson Title: Forecasting with Aimsir Fhaistineach (Future Tense) Lesson Description: In the final lesson, students will learn about the future tense (aimsir fhaistineach). The teacher will explain how to form the future tense and its applications in everyday conversation. Students will participate in a role-play activity where they will make predictions about future events using the future tense. Learning intentions include understanding the future tense formation and applying it in real-life scenarios. Success criteria involve students accurately using at least five future tense verbs in their role-plays. Assessment will be based on the clarity and correctness of their predictions during the role-play.

Mastering Future Tense

Lesson Overview

  • Subject: Languages (Irish – Gaeilge)
  • Year Group: Year 10
  • Lesson Number: 3 of 3 in the unit Tense Mastery: Past, Present, Future
  • Lesson Duration: 40 minutes
  • Class Size: 14 students
  • Curriculum Area: Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) – Key Stage 4 (aligned with UK education standards)

Learning Intentions

By the end of this lesson, students will:

  1. Understand how to form the Aimsir Fháistineach (Future Tense) in Irish.
  2. Recognise common future tense verbs and structures.
  3. Apply the future tense accurately in conversation.
  4. Use the future tense to make realistic and creative predictions.

Success Criteria

  • Students correctly conjugate and use at least five future tense verbs in sentences.
  • In role-play discussions, students accurately and confidently use the future tense.
  • Students demonstrate understanding of verb endings and pronunciation.

Lesson Structure

Starter Activity (5 minutes) – ‘Future Snapshots’

  • Teacher displays five images (e.g. technological advancements, space exploration, AI, climate change impacts, future cities).
  • Students predict what might happen in each scenario, using English initially.
  • The teacher introduces the focus: Today, we will learn how to express these future ideas, but in Irish!

Explicit Teaching (10 minutes) – Future Tense Formation

1. Regular Verbs (Briathra Rialta)

  • Teacher writes two regular verb stems on the board: bris (to break) and dún (to close).
  • Explain slender (caol) vs. broad (leathan) verb endings.
  • Demonstrate:
    • 1st Conjugation (One-syllable verbs) → Brisfidh mé, Brisfidh tú…
    • 2nd Conjugation (Two-syllable verbs) → Ceannóidh mé, Ceannóidh tú...

2. Irregular Verbs (Na Briathra Neamhrialta)

  • Introduce three key irregular verbs commonly used in conversation:
    • Beidh mé (I will be)
    • Feicfidh mé (I will see)
    • Déanfaidh mé (I will do/make)
  • Quick oral pronunciation drill.

Guided Practice (10 minutes) – ‘Fortune Teller Pair Work’

  • Pair students up. Each student receives three future-themed question cards, e.g.:
    1. Cad a dhéanfaidh tú an samhradh seo? (What will you do this summer?)
    2. Cá mbeidh tú i gceann deich mbliana? (Where will you be in ten years?)
    3. An bhfeicfidh tú athrú mór sa domhan amach anseo? (Will you see a big change in the world?)
  • One student asks, the other responds using the future tense. Then they swap.
  • Teacher circulates to correct verb forms and promote fluency.

Main Activity (10 minutes) – Role-Play ‘News from the Future’

  • Scenario: It is the year 2050. You are a guest on an Irish radio show predicting the future.
  • Small groups of 3-4 students collaborate to create two or three predictions about the future (e.g. "Beidh daoine ina gcónaí ar an ngealach!").
  • Each group presents their predictions aloud, ensuring everyone speaks.
  • Teacher provides verbal feedback focusing on pronunciation and accuracy.

Plenary (5 minutes) – ‘Exit Ticket: A Sentence for the Future’

  • Each student writes one sentence about their own future using a future tense verb.
  • Some students share aloud for final class feedback.
  • Teacher gently checks accuracy without over-correcting, reinforcing confidence.

Assessment & Differentiation

Assessment Methods

  1. Formative Assessment: Monitoring correct verb formation during pair work and role-play.
  2. Summative Assessment: Evaluating student output in the role-play activity (correct use of future verbs).

Differentiation Strategies

  • Support: Word banks and sentence starters (e.g. "Sa todhchaí, beidh...").
  • Challenge: High-ability students encouraged to use more complex sentences (e.g. Nuair a bheidh mé in ainm is a bheith fásta, taistealóidh mé timpeall an domhain! – 'When I am grown up, I will travel around the world!').

Teacher Reflection Questions

  • Did students confidently use the future tense in their role-plays?
  • Were any students struggling with irregular verb formations?
  • How successful were the speaking tasks in promoting fluency?

Resources Needed

  1. Future-themed images for Starter Activity.
  2. Verb conjugation chart or printed reference sheets.
  3. Conversation prompt cards for guided practice.
  4. Small whiteboards or exit-ticket slips for plenary.

Extension & Homework Idea

  • Creative Task: Students write a diary entry from the future (150 words) imagining their life in 20 years.
  • Challenge Task: They must implement at least six different future tense verbs correctly.

This lesson engages students in an interactive way while solidifying grammar concepts. It aligns with Key Stage 4 Modern Foreign Languages objectives and uses age-appropriate, real-world applications to encourage deeper language retention.
