Teaching Instructions

Revise learning from 5th class. A little bit of everything from the maths curriculum but focus on operations and fractions

Lesson Overview

Duration: 50 minutes
Class size: 22 students
Year: Sixth Class (Age approx. 11-12 years)
Curriculum: IE Curriculum (Curriculum framework for Ireland)
Focus: Revision of Year 5 Maths with an emphasis on operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and fractions

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

  1. Recall and apply basic arithmetic operations proficiently (add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers and decimals). (Refer: IE Curriculum Number Strand, Learning Outcome 4N1)
  2. Understand and manipulate fractions including comparing, ordering, addition, subtraction, and simplifying fractions. (Refer: IE Curriculum Number Strand, Learning Outcome 4N4, 4N5)
  3. Develop problem-solving skills by applying operations and fractions in real-life contexts and mathematical problems. (Refer: IE Curriculum Strand Unit: Number, Operational Proficiency)
  4. Communicate mathematical reasoning clearly using correct terminology. (Refer: IE Curriculum General Competency: Communicating)

Resources Required

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Grid paper and ruled maths notebooks
  • Fraction strips or fraction circles
  • Individual mini whiteboards and pens
  • Pre-prepared question cards (mixed operations and fractions)
  • Timer/Stopwatch
  • Visual aids (e.g. fraction wall poster)

Lesson Structure

Introduction (8 minutes)

  • Starter activity: Whole-class mental math warm-up (5 mins)
Quick-fire questions on basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers and decimals.
  • Recap discussion (3 mins):
Briefly revise main concepts from Year 5: types of operations, decimal place values, basic understanding of fractions as parts of a whole. Use questioning to activate prior knowledge.

Teacher’s tip: Use relatable examples such as sharing sweets or measuring ingredients to anchor learning.

Main Activities (35 minutes)

Activity 1: Operation Stations (15 minutes)

  • Pupils rotate in groups of 4 to 5 stations focusing on different operations:
    1. Addition and subtraction of decimals (e.g., money problems)
    2. Multiplication and division of whole numbers (e.g., arrays and repeated addition)
    3. Mixed operation word problems
  • At each station, pupils solve 3-4 short questions on mini whiteboards. Encourage peer discussion.
  • Teacher circulates to support and prompt deeper thinking.

Curriculum Link: Enhances procedural fluency and problem-solving (Number strand – Teaching Number Operations)

Activity 2: Fraction Fun (20 minutes)

  • Begin with a visual demonstration using fraction strips to compare and order fractions (5 mins).
  • Pupils complete targeted tasks:
    • Writing fractions in simplest form
    • Adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators
    • Converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa
  • Form pairs to work on 3-5 problem-solving fraction questions where pupils explain their reasoning aloud. Use fraction circles for tactile support if needed.
  • Teacher highlights connections between fractions and division concepts from prior knowledge.

Curriculum Link: Builds conceptual understanding and application of fractions as per Number Strand

Plenary (7 minutes)

  • Math Talk: Invite 4-5 pupils to share their favourite problem from the lesson and explain their thinking process.
  • Quick quiz (3 minutes):
On mini whiteboards, pupils answer rapid-fire questions mixing operations and fractions to reinforce key skills.
  • Provide a clear, positive summary highlighting progress and the importance of operations and fractions for everyday maths.

Assessment

  • Formative Assessment: Observations during station rotations and fraction pair work. Use questioning to assess depth of understanding and misconceptions.
  • Mini quiz responses: Inform teacher of individual confidence and quick recall abilities.
  • Pupil self-assessment: Post-lesson, pupils write one thing they found easy and one challenge for future focus.

Differentiation

  • Provide additional fraction visuals and manipulatives for learners who require concrete supports.
  • Challenge advanced pupils with multi-step problems involving combined operations and fractions (e.g., calculate total cost including fractions of euros).
  • Use peer tutoring during activities for scaffolded learning.

Cross-Curricular Links

  • Numeracy & Literacy: Explanation and communication of mathematical reasoning encourage language development.
  • SPHE: Collaborative tasks reinforce social skills like turn-taking and active listening.
  • Visual Arts: Creating fraction strips and visual aids could be extended in art class.

Reflection & Teacher Notes

  • Monitor pupils who may confuse operations in multi-step problems—offer clear stepwise strategies.
  • Emphasise real-life relevance to increase engagement, e.g., cooking recipes, money calculations.
  • Adjust pacing if fraction concepts require more time, possibly plan a follow-up lesson for deeper fraction operations.

This structured yet dynamic lesson plan aligns precisely with the IE Curriculum’s Number Strand and general competencies, offering a hands-on, inclusive revision of essential mathematical operations and fractions for Sixth Class learners.
