News Script Topics

Overview

This 45-minute lesson is designed for a class of 27 fourth-class students. Aligned with the Irish Primary Language Curriculum (IE Curriculum framework for English), the focus is on developing writing and oral language skills through exploring a variety of news script topics that stimulate creativity, critical thinking, and engagement with current events. The lesson prepares students to produce informative and structured news scripts while enhancing vocabulary, sentence structure, and confidence in presentation.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • L.O.1: Identify and brainstorm diverse, age-appropriate current topics for news scripts, demonstrating an understanding of what makes a good news story. (English Language: Writing Strand – Text Types and Purposes)
  • L.O.2: Use appropriate vocabulary and sentence structures to articulate ideas clearly in writing. (English Language: Oral Language – Expressing and Developing Ideas)
  • L.O.3: Collaborate respectfully in small groups to discuss potential news topics, demonstrating listening and speaking skills. (Wellbeing: Communicating and Working with Others)
  • L.O.4: Develop initial drafts or outlines for news scripts based on chosen topics, applying skills of organisation and sequencing. (English Language: Writing Strand – Planning, Drafting, and Revising)

Lesson Structure

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Greet the students and briefly explain that they will explore various exciting topics to write news scripts about.
  • Emphasise how news helps us share important stories with others in clear, interesting ways.
  • Quickly discuss what makes a good news story (timely, interesting, clear facts).

2. Exploring Potential News Topics (10 minutes)

  • Present a curated list of 12 age-appropriate topics on the whiteboard and handouts.

  • Topics:

    1. The school’s new playground opening
    2. An exciting local sports event
    3. A visit from a community helper (e.g., firefighter, nurse)
    4. A new book released in the school library
    5. Important environmental changes nearby (e.g., planting trees)
    6. A special cultural festival happening in town
    7. Achievement of a local young athlete or artist
    8. School recycling initiative success story
    9. Weather changes and how they affect the local community
    10. Interview with the school principal
    11. A science experiment or project at school
    12. Local animal rescue story
  • Ask the class to read and silently reflect on which topics they find most interesting and why.

3. Group Discussion and Selection (10 minutes)

  • Divide students into small groups of 3 (9 groups total, with one group of 4).
  • Each group discusses their favourite 2 or 3 topics and why they think the topics make good news stories.
  • Encourage groups to choose one main topic to focus on and briefly jot down ideas related to that topic (who, what, where, when, why).
  • Circulate to support groups, prompt thinking with questions: “Who is involved? Why is this important? What can people learn?”

4. Drafting Outlines (15 minutes)

  • Students return to individual desks and begin drafting an outline of a short news script based on their group’s chosen topic.
  • Template guidance on the whiteboard:
    • Opening sentence to introduce the story
    • Important facts and details (answering key questions)
    • A closing sentence or call to action
  • Encourage use of simple, clear sentences and inclusion of interesting facts or quotes.
  • Teachers facilitate, encourage neat writing, and provide vocabulary support where needed.

5. Sharing and Feedback (5 minutes)

  • Select 3-4 volunteers to share their draft opening sentence or key news fact with the class.
  • Provide positive, constructive feedback focussing on clarity, interest, and relevant details.
  • Highlight expressive oral skills and correct use of news-writing language.

Assessment

  • Formative: Teacher observes group participation and engagement during discussions; checks outlines for evidence of understanding key elements of news scripts (clear introduction, relevant facts).
  • Success Criteria: Students successfully identify valid newsworthy topics, produce coherent script outlines with structured ideas, and express their ideas clearly orally.

Differentiation

  • Support: Provide sentence starters or word banks targeted at vocabulary for less confident writers; allow oral drafts for students with writing difficulties.
  • Extension: Challenge advanced students to include direct quotes or multiple perspectives in their scripts; discuss the impact of media on public opinion briefly.

Next Steps

  • In the following lesson, students will fully draft their news scripts and practise reading them aloud, focusing on expression and fluency, preparing for a class news-broadcast simulation.

By focusing on student-centred topic exploration and structured writing practice within the IE Curriculum framework, this lesson will empower students to develop key literacy skills crucial for confident, creative communication in real-world contexts.
