Overview
This 30-minute lesson invites Junior Infants (aged 4-5 years) to explore St. Patrick’s Day through hands-on crafting. Through cutting, gluing, and assembling green paper shapes into festive decorations, pupils will develop their fine motor skills, creativity, and cultural awareness, fully aligned with the Early Childhood Curriculum (Siolta) and the Aistear framework used in Ireland.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:
- Use scissors and glue safely and appropriately to cut and assemble shapes (fine motor skills)
- Recognise and name simple shapes (circle, triangle, shamrock leaf) and the colour green
- Understand the cultural significance of St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland
- Express creativity by designing their own St. Patrick’s Day decoration
- Demonstrate early language skills through discussion and simple instructions
Resources
- Green A4 paper (pre-cut into smaller squares for easier handling)
- Safety scissors (child-friendly)
- White glue sticks
- Markers/crayons (optional for decorating)
- Printed simple shamrock and hat templates (outline only)
- Visual aids: Pictures of shamrocks, leprechauns, and pots of gold
- Carpet area or tables arranged for small group work
Lesson Structure
1. Introduction (5 mins)
Circle Time Discussion:
- Show pictures of St. Patrick’s Day symbols (shamrocks, leprechauns).
- Ask children: “What do you know about St. Patrick’s Day?”
- Explain that today they will make decorations for St. Patrick’s Day, using scissors and glue.
- Introduce key vocabulary: shamrock, green, cut, glue, decorate.
Curriculum Alignment: Aistear - Language, Literacy & Communication; Siolta Standard 7.
2. Demonstration (5 mins)
- Model how to safely hold and use scissors to cut along the printed outlines of shamrock shapes. Emphasise gentle, careful movements.
- Demonstrate applying a glue stick and assembling pieces into a simple decoration (e.g., a shamrock or hat).
- Encourage gentle handling of materials and tidying workspaces.
Curriculum Alignment: Siolta Standard 3 - Active Learning (hands-on skills)
3. Hands-On Activity (15 mins)
- Children each receive green paper squares and templates for cutting.
- Support children individually or in small groups to cut out shamrock leaves and other shapes.
- Help them glue parts together to create a St. Patrick’s Day decoration, encouraging their own design choices.
- Circulate to encourage language use (“What shape are you cutting?” “Where will you glue this?”).
- Use positive reinforcement to build confidence and independence.
Curriculum Alignment: Aistear Well-being & Active Learning; Siolta Standard 3 & 7
4. Sharing and Clean-Up (5 mins)
- Invite children to share their decorations in a “show-and-tell” circle, prompting statements like: “I made a shamrock.”
- Review safety and tidiness rules while cleaning up materials and returning scissors and glue.
- Reinforce vocabulary introduced earlier.
Curriculum Alignment: Aistear Language & Personal and Social Skills; Siolta Standard 7
Assessment and Reflection
- Observation: Teacher records children’s ability to handle scissors and glue safely and their capacity to follow simple instructions.
- Language development: Monitor use of vocabulary introduced during the lesson.
- Creativity and Engagement: Note individual design choices and enthusiasm for the activity.
- Next Steps: Identify if some children need extra support with fine motor skills or following instructions for future lessons.
Differentiation
- Provide pre-cut shamrock shapes for children who struggle with scissors.
- Offer extra challenge by encouraging pupils to decorate their craft using markers or stickers.
- Use one-on-one support for children with additional needs during the cutting and assembling phase.
Extensions and Home Links
- Send a simple colour-in shamrock template home for families to decorate together.
- Encourage parents to talk about any St. Patrick’s Day traditions they celebrate.
- Include a short rhyme or song about shamrocks and St. Patrick’s Day to consolidate vocabulary.
This lesson is the first of three in the Springtime Art Explorations unit, establishing cultural awareness and foundational art skills through engaging tactile activities. It lays a strong foundation in line with Ireland’s early childhood education frameworks, promoting well-being, identity, and active learning at a developmentally appropriate level.
