Overview
This 50-minute lesson is designed for a class of 10 fifth-class students in Ireland, following the IE Curriculum framework. It integrates the Over the Moon programme (Weeks 3 & 4, September) with the UFLY spelling programme (starting Lesson 41) to boost comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling skills. Lesson Structure
1. Warm-up & Oral Language Activation (10 minutes)
Activity: “Word Detective”
- Show flashcards with 6 key vocabulary words from Over the Moon Weeks 3 & 4.
- Students discuss in pairs what they think the words mean or have seen them used in stories before.
- Whole class shares predictions; teacher writes correct definitions on the board.

2. Reading & Vocabulary Focus (10 minutes)
Activity: Contextual Reading & Highlighting

- Focus discussion on how the highlighted words contribute to meaning.

3. Spelling Rules with UFLY Programme (15 minutes)
Activity A: Introduce/UFLY Lesson 41 Spelling Patterns
- Teacher explains and demonstrates 4-5 spelling patterns/rules featured in Lesson 41 (e.g., prefixes, suffixes, common letter strings).
- Examples written on whiteboard, pronounced clearly.
Activity B: Spelling Practice Game: “Spell & Tell”
- Students take turns spelling words aloud from UFLY’s list that incorporate the patterns.
- After spelling, they create a sentence orally using the word.
- Teacher corrects gently and reinforces correct spelling and pronunciation.

4. Creative Writing and Pair Work (10 minutes)
Activity: Mini-story Challenge
- In pairs, students use at least 3 vocabulary words from Over the Moon and 3 spelling words from UFLY Lesson 41 to write a short story (5-7 sentences).
- Focus on correct spelling and sensible use of vocabulary.
- Encourage them to illustrate their stories if time permits.

5. Assessment and Feedback (5 minutes)
