Teaching Instructions

I want the plan to look at the history of markets and local trading in Ireland. Specifically in Dublim, Liberty Market etc. I want the students to be involved in active learning group work examining photos of markets from the past and comparing them to shopping nowadays.

The Market Evolution

Objective

By the end of the lesson, students will:

  1. Understand the historical significance of markets in Dublin, particularly Liberty Market.
  2. Compare and contrast past marketplaces with modern shopping experiences.
  3. Collaborate effectively in groups to develop critical thinking and presentation skills.

Curriculum Links

This lesson plan aligns with the Primary School Curriculum, Social, Environmental, and Scientific Education (SESE) guidelines. The following areas are notably addressed:

  • Historical Awareness and Understanding
  • Active Learning and Engagement
  • Collaborative Learning Strategies

Materials Needed

  • Historical photos of Dublin markets, including Liberty Market.
  • Modern shopping images (photos or digital if accessible).
  • Whiteboard and markers.
  • A projector (if available).
  • A worksheet with comparison prompts.
  • Four large sheets of paper and markers for group work.

Time Allocation

  • Introduction (5 minutes)
  • Group Activity (25 minutes)
  • Presentations and Discussion (10 minutes)

Lesson Outline

Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Engage the Class:

    • Begin with a few questions to hook students.
      • "What do you think a market looks like today?"
      • "Have you ever visited a market? What was it like?"
    • Introduce the topic of historical markets in Dublin, emphasising Liberty Market.
  2. Set Objectives:

    • Explain what students will learn and the need for comparison between past and present markets.

Group Activity (25 minutes)

  1. Divide the Class (2 minutes):

    • Organise students into groups of 5 (6 groups total).
  2. Distribute Materials (3 minutes):

    • Provide each group with a selection of historical photos of Liberty Market and modern shopping scenarios. Each group also receives the worksheet with comparison prompts.
  3. Group Discussion (10 minutes):

    • Instruct each group to examine the photos and discuss:
      • What stands out in the design and layout of the historical market versus modern shops?
      • What products or services were common in the past compared to today?
      • How do you think the shopping experience was different back then?
  4. Create a Comparison Chart (10 minutes):

    • On their large sheet of paper, each group should create a chart comparing key elements of historical and modern shopping based on their discussions. Encourage creativity—students can include drawings or bullet points.

Presentations and Discussion (10 minutes)

  1. Group Presentations (5 minutes):

    • Each group will take turns presenting their charts to the class. They should explain their observations and insights based on the images discussed.
  2. Class Discussion (5 minutes):

    • Lead a discussion on the evolving nature of markets. Ask questions such as:
      • "How have shopper needs changed over time?"
      • "What do you think the future of markets might hold?"

Assessment

  • Formative Assessment:
    • Monitor group discussions and presentations for engagement and understanding.
    • Give feedback based on their participation in group work and the quality of their comparisons.

Reflection

  • Encourage students to reflect on what they learned about the markets' evolution and how it relates to their own experiences in shopping today.
  • Consider leaving them with a thought-provoking question for homework: “If you could visit any market from the past, which would it be and why?”

This lesson aims not only to educate students about the historical aspects of Irish markets but to cultivate teamwork, critical thinking, and presentation skills in an engaging manner.
