Understanding Forgiveness

Overview

This 40-minute lesson is designed for a 3rd and 4th class Religious Education session, aimed at developing students’ understanding of forgiveness through the Curriculum Framework for Ireland (IE). The lesson integrates prayer, group work, interactive and hands-on activities, and a reflective worksheet, and supports key learning outcomes within the curriculum’s strands and elements related to moral and spiritual development.

Lesson Structure

1. Starter - What is Forgiveness? (5 minutes)

Activity: Teacher writes the word "Forgiveness" on the board.
Pose the question: "What do you think forgiveness means?"
Invite 3-4 brief student responses.
Teacher provides a simple definition referencing IE curriculum:
“Forgiveness means letting go of hurt or anger when someone has upset us, so we can live peacefully with others.”
Link to Christian values of kindness and mercy.

2. Group Work - Role-play Forgiveness (15 minutes)

Setup: Divide the class into 6 groups of 4 students.
Give each group a role-play card describing a simple conflict (e.g., someone breaking a friend's toy, saying something unkind, forgetting to include someone).
Task: Groups discuss what happened, how each person might feel, and how forgiveness could help. Then, they act out the scene showing the conflict and the resolution through forgiveness.
Teacher circulates, supports understanding and asks prompting questions about feelings and actions.
Each group performs their role-play for the class (2-3 minutes each).

3. Prayer Time - Reflecting on Forgiveness (5 minutes)

Gather students in a circle.
Teacher reads a short prayer aloud focusing on asking God to help us forgive and to be forgiving. For example:
“Lord, help us to forgive others as You forgive us. Give us kind hearts and peace in our families and friends. Amen.”
Invite one or two students (optional) to add their own prayer intentions about forgiveness.
Brief moment of silent reflection.

4. Hands-on Learning - Forgiveness Flowers (10 minutes)

Each student receives paper and colouring tools.
Instructions: Create a flower with petals labelled with ways to show forgiveness (e.g., saying sorry, saying “I forgive you”, helping someone, praying for others).
Encourage creativity and a mix of words and drawings.
Teacher models one flower to show ideas.
Students share their flowers in pairs or small groups, explaining one petal.

5. Worksheet - Forgiveness Reflection (5 minutes)

Distribute the worksheet that invites students to:
- Write a few sentences about a time they forgave or were forgiven.
- Draw a picture of someone forgiving or being forgiven.
- Finish the sentence starter: “Forgiveness makes me feel…”
This task consolidates learning and encourages personal connection to the topic.

Assessment & Evaluation

Formative assessment through observation of group discussions and role-play engagement.
Teacher reviews worksheets to evaluate understanding of forgiveness concept and personal reflection.
Use questioning throughout the lesson to gauge depth of understanding (e.g., “Why is forgiveness important?” “How does it help us feel better?”).

Differentiation

Support students with additional scaffolding during group work and worksheet (sentence starters, one-to-one support).
More able students encouraged to give detailed explanations and expand role-plays.
Visual aids and concrete examples enhance accessibility for all learners.
