Using Water Wisely

Overview

This 30-minute lesson will engage second class students (age 7-8) in exploring the many ways water is used in everyday life. Following the IE Curriculum framework for Geography, students will develop understanding of water’s diverse roles and enhance categorisation, communication, and critical thinking skills. They will collaboratively mindmap uses of water, participate in a guided discussion about water in the home, and reinforce learning through an interactive picture-sorting game.

Learning Objectives

Materials Required

• Large blank mindmap poster or whiteboard
• Markers or coloured pens (4 different colours for categories)
• Picture cards (approximately 20) depicting different water uses, e.g.:
  • Work: farmer irrigating crops, factory, fisherman
  • Home: cooking, cleaning, washing
  • Transport: boat, ferry, water taxi
  • Fun: swimming, water park, fishing
• Small bins or labelled trays for sorting picture cards
• Timer or stopwatch

Lesson Structure (30 minutes)

1. Engage & Introduce (5 minutes)

• Begin by asking the class, “Can anyone tell me why water is important to us?”
• Introduce the four categories where water is often used: Work, Home, Transport, Fun. Write these headings on the board or chart, each in a different colour.
• Explain that today’s lesson will help them think about all the ways water helps people.

2. Mindmap Creation (10 minutes)

• On a large poster or whiteboard, start with the word Water in the centre.
• Invite students to shout out examples of how they or their family use water. Write these responses branching off from the centre.
• Gradually guide students to group these ideas under the four categories, using the corresponding colours.
• Example: washing clothes and cooking under Home; fishing under Work; boat rides under Transport; swimming under Fun.
• Encourage students to think beyond the obvious (e.g., water used in schools, fire fighting, gardens).

3. Class Discussion – Water at Home (7 minutes)

• Focus discussion on the “Home” category from the mindmap.
• Ask students to describe how water is used in their own homes. Encourage volunteers to explain why these uses are important.
• Seeds critical thinking by asking questions like:
  • “What would happen if we didn’t have water at home?”
  • “How can we save water while using it at home?”
• Summarise key points on the whiteboard.

4. Interactive Game – Sort the Pictures! (7 minutes)

• Divide class into 4 small groups (6-7 students each).
• Provide each group with a mixed pile of picture cards and labelled bins/trays for Work, Home, Transport, and Fun.
• Set a timer for 5 minutes. Groups sort pictures into the correct category together, discussing reasons.
• After sorting, each group presents one picture from each category and explains their choice.
• Reinforce correct categorisation and gently correct misunderstandings.

5. Wrap-up & Reflection (1 minute)

• Recap the four categories.
• Ask: “What is one new thing you learned about water today?”
• Encourage students to think about water use at home over the weekend and how they can help conserve it.
