Writing Explanations

Overview

Grade: 3rd Class (8-9 years old)
Duration: 30 minutes
Class Size: 26 students
Subject: English
Unit: Explaining the World (Lesson 1 of 5)
Curriculum Alignment: Irish Primary Language Curriculum (1999) and Junior Cycle English Specification (NCCA)
Focus: Introduction to explanation writing – purpose, structure, and features

Learning Intentions

By the end of this lesson, students will:

  • Understand what explanation writing is and why we use it
  • Identify the key features of an explanation text
  • Recognise how explanation writing is used in everyday life
  • Begin to explore the structure of explanation texts (introduction, sequence of explanations, conclusion)

Success Criteria

Students can:

  • Explain in their own words what an explanation is
  • Point out key features like ‘technical vocabulary’, ‘sequencing’, and ‘clarity’ in example texts
  • Participate actively in class discussions and activities
  • Complete a simple group activity identifying parts of explanation texts

Curriculum Links

  • Primary Language Curriculum (Ireland) Strand Unit: Writing
    • Compose texts with a clear purpose (e.g., to inform, explain)
    • Use appropriate vocabulary and connectives to sequence information
  • Junior Cycle English (NCCA) Statement of Learning (SOL) 6 & 7
    • Understand and use a variety of text types
    • Communicate effectively for different purposes and audiences

Materials Needed

  • Whiteboard + markers
  • Copies of three short, age-appropriate explanation text examples (e.g., How plants grow, How a volcano erupts, How rain forms)
  • Colour-coded highlighters or markers (group sets)
  • Chart paper or large A3 sheets for group work
  • Sticky notes for students’ questions/comments
  • Prepared “Explanation Writing Features” poster for classroom display

Lesson Outline

1. Starter Activity: What is an Explanation? (5 minutes)

  • Write the word “Explanation” on the board.
  • Ask: "Has anyone heard the word 'explanation' before? What do you think it means?"
  • Invite 3-4 brief contributions, guiding them to the idea that explanations tell us how or why something happens.
  • Show an everyday example: "Why do leaves fall in autumn?" (simple, relatable)
  • Highlight that explanations help us understand the world around us, matching the unit title Explaining the World

2. Exploring Explanation Texts (10 minutes)

  • Distribute copies of the three short explanation texts.
  • Ask students to read in pairs (or read aloud as a class for lower readers).
  • As they read, instruct students to:
    • Highlight words that describe processes or reasons (e.g., “because”, “then”, “after”)
    • Circle any new or tricky words—these are often technical vocabulary.
  • After reading, gather feedback:
    • What did the text explain?
    • What words help explain what is happening?
    • How is the information organised? (Order, cause & effect)
  • Record key features shared by the class on the board, such as:
    • Clear title
    • Technical vocabulary
    • Logical order
    • Connective words (then, because, next)

3. Group Activity: Feature Detective (10 minutes)

  • Split class into 5 groups of 5-6 students.
  • Give each group one example explanation text (different from earlier) on chart paper.
  • Task: Identify and mark as many features of explanation writing as possible using highlighters/markers. For example:
    • Underline the title in blue
    • Circle technical words in red
    • Highlight sequencing words in green
  • Groups write a short sentence about what part they found easiest/hardest.
  • Each group shares one feature with the class.

4. Wrap-Up and Reflection (5 minutes)

  • Recap key learning points:
    • Purpose of explanation writing is to tell us how or why things happen.
    • It uses special words to help us understand processes clearly.
    • It is organised—usually in a sequence with a title and key vocabulary.
  • Sticky note exit ticket: Each student writes one new thing they learned about explanations and sticks it on the “Learning Wall”.
  • Preview next lesson: Writing our own explanation using what we learned today!

Differentiation and Inclusion

  • Provide simplified texts or read aloud for students who need support with reading.
  • Use visual aids and clear examples to support EAL learners.
  • Encourage peer collaboration to promote language development and confidence.
  • Provide sentence starters during group discussions for students who need them (e.g., “This part shows…”, “The word ___ means…”).

Assessment for Learning (AfL)

  • Observations during discussions and group work to assess understanding of features.
  • Written exit ticket to check individual grasp of explanation writing purpose and features.
  • Use feedback from groups to adjust scaffold in subsequent lessons within the unit.

Teaching Reflection Notes (Post-Lesson)

  • Were students able to identify explanation text features independently?
  • Did the group activity promote collaboration and deeper understanding?
  • Were technical terms introduced clearly and effectively?
  • What strategies worked best to engage all learners?
  • Adjustments to incorporate in lesson 2 to build on today’s foundations.

This lesson offers a hands-on, collaborative, and inquiry-based introduction to explanation writing. It aligns with Irish educational standards by fostering oral and written language skills aimed at understanding and composing informational texts. The structured yet interactive approach supports diverse learners and lays a strong foundation for the unit Explaining the World.
