Children of the Rush
📚 Part 1: Read the Passage
Children of the Rush
In the 1860s, news of gold brought thousands of people to the Otago goldfields. Some families travelled long distances by ship, horse and cart, or on foot. Life on the goldfields was difficult. Tents stood beside muddy tracks, and fresh food was not always easy to find.
Children had important jobs to do. They carried water, helped prepare meals, looked after younger brothers and sisters, and sometimes searched for small pieces of gold. Schooling was often interrupted because families moved from place to place. Even so, children found ways to play. They made toys from scraps of wood, explored the creek, and listened to stories around the campfire.
The gold rush changed many communities. Some people became wealthy, but many found very little gold. When the rush ended, families had to decide whether to stay, move on, or return home.
