Part 1: Assess Your Starting Performance
WALT: We Are Learning To apply skill-learning principles to improve our own hula hoop performance.
Success criteria: I can record my performance accurately, identify my learning stage, choose a suitable practice method, and explain whether my practice improved my performance.
1. Complete 10 hula hoop attempts. Record each attempt using this format: S = successful attempt, E = error type, C = consistency (1–5), Co = confidence (1–5), D = difficulty (1–5).
Attempt 1: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 2: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 3: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 4: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 5: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 6: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 7: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 8: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 9: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 10: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
2. How many successful attempts did you complete? ______ out of 10
3. Which error happened most often?
4. Which stage of learning are you currently in? Tick one and justify your choice.
Cognitive stage – I am learning the parts and make frequent errors.
Associative stage – I make fewer errors and am becoming more consistent.
Autonomous stage – I can perform the skill consistently with little conscious thought.
Part 2: Choose and Apply a Practice Method
5. Choose the practice method that best suits your current performance.
Whole practice – practise the complete hula hoop skill.
Part practice – isolate and practise one difficult component.
Whole-part-whole practice – perform the whole skill, isolate a component, then perform the whole skill again.
Distributed practice – include regular rest breaks between practice attempts.
Massed practice – practise continuously with few or no rest breaks.
6. I chose __________________________ practice because it matches my performance. Explain using evidence from your first 10 attempts.
7. Identify one specific focus for your practice. For example: keeping the hoop level, controlling hip movement, maintaining rhythm, or recovering when the hoop drops.
8. Practise your chosen method safely for the time set by your teacher. What adjustment or feedback helped you most?
Part 3: Reassess and Reflect
9. Complete another 10 hula hoop attempts. Use the same recording system as in Question 1.
Attempt 1: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 2: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 3: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 4: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 5: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 6: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 7: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 8: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 9: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
Attempt 10: S ____ E __________________ C ____ Co ____ D ____
10. Compare your first and second sets of attempts. Explain how or why your practice method worked or did not work.
Challenge and support:
If you need support: use a slower rhythm, practise near a wall or with a partner, reduce the movement range, or focus on one component at a time.
Extension: increase the challenge by changing direction, travelling, adding a turn, changing the hoop height, or creating a short routine. Record which challenge affects your consistency and confidence.
