📖 The Story: Jake's Cool Adventure

Read this story carefully, then answer the questions below.

Nine-year-old Jake wiped the sweat from his forehead as he stared out of his bedroom window. The thermometer outside read 35°C - the hottest day of the summer heatwave! His mum had warned him to stay indoors, but Jake was determined to find ways to keep cool.

First, Jake filled a large paddling pool in the back garden with ice-cold water from the hosepipe. He splashed about for twenty minutes, pretending to be a polar bear in the Arctic. Next, he made frozen orange lollies using his favourite fruit juice and ice cube trays. Whilst waiting for them to freeze, Jake created a den under the dining room table using wet towels and a portable fan.

By lunchtime, Jake's homemade lollies were ready. He shared them with his little sister Emma and their neighbour, Mrs Patterson, who was struggling in her hot garden next door. "What a thoughtful boy!" she exclaimed, gratefully accepting the icy treat.

As the afternoon sun blazed overhead, Jake discovered the coolest spot in the house - the tiled bathroom floor. He lay there reading his favourite comic books, feeling the delicious coolness against his back. When evening arrived and the temperature finally dropped to 28°C, Jake felt proud of his creative solutions. He had turned the hottest day of the year into an exciting adventure, proving that with imagination and kindness, even a heatwave could be fun!
