The History of the Mobile Phone
The mobile phone is one of the most transformative inventions of the modern age. Today, billions of people around the world carry one in their pocket, but the journey from the first call to the smartphone in your hand has been a remarkable one.
The very first mobile phone call was made on 3rd April 1973 by an American engineer named Martin Cooper, who worked for the technology company Motorola. He made the call using a device called the Motorola DynaTAC, which weighed a hefty 1.1 kilograms and measured 23 centimetres in length. It took ten years of development before this phone became available to the public in 1983, and it cost an eye-watering $3,995 — the equivalent of over £8,000 in today's money.
Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, mobile phones were large, expensive, and used mainly by businesspeople. They were often called "brick phones" due to their size and weight. The networks they used were called first-generation (1G) networks, which could only carry voice calls.
By the mid-1990s, mobile phones had become smaller and more affordable. The introduction of second-generation (2G) networks allowed users to send text messages (SMS) for the first time. The first ever text message was sent on 3rd December 1992 by engineer Neil Papworth. It simply read: "Merry Christmas."
The early 2000s brought 3G networks, which enabled mobile internet access, picture messaging, and video calls. Phones became increasingly sophisticated, with built-in cameras, music players, and colour screens becoming standard features.
The biggest revolution came in 2007, when Apple's co-founder Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone. This touchscreen smartphone combined a phone, an internet browser, and a music player in one device. It changed the industry forever. Google followed shortly after with the Android operating system in 2008, making smartphones accessible to a much wider audience.
Today, modern smartphones run on 5G networks, offer high-quality cameras, and connect us to a world of apps, social media, and streaming services. From a 1.1-kilogram brick to a sleek device thinner than a pencil, the mobile phone has come an extraordinarily long way in just fifty years.
