Our solar system is a group of objects that travel around a star called the Sun. The Sun is at the centre and gives light and heat. There are eight main planets. The four closest to the Sun — Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars — are rocky and called the inner planets. The four farther away — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune — are larger and mostly made of gas or ice. Many planets have moons. There is also a band of rocks called the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and sometimes comets with bright tails visit the inner solar system. Gravity is the force that keeps planets and other objects moving around the Sun.
