The Midnight Garden

When Maya moved into her grandmother’s old cottage, she noticed a small, green door at the bottom of the garden wall. It was hidden behind a curtain of ivy and had a rusty keyhole, but no key could be found.

Every evening, Maya searched the garden. She looked beneath flowerpots, inside the garden shed and even under the smooth stones beside the pond. At last, on the seventh day, she spotted something shining in the long grass. It was a tiny silver key.

The key fitted the lock perfectly. With a quiet click, the door swung open. Beyond it was a garden unlike any Maya had ever seen. Moonlight glittered on the leaves, white flowers opened as she watched and hundreds of fireflies floated above the paths like tiny lanterns.

In the centre of the garden stood a wooden bench. Carved into its back were the words: “This garden appears only to those who are curious.”

Maya sat down and listened. Somewhere among the trees, a nightingale began to sing. She smiled, knowing that she had discovered a secret she would never forget. Before leaving, she carefully locked the green door and placed the silver key around her neck.
