Distributive Property Practice

Break one factor into smaller parts. Multiply each part, then add the products. Show your working.

Partition and Multiply

1.Work out 3 × 9 by splitting 9 into 5 + 4. Write the two smaller multiplication facts and add their answers.

2.Calculate 4 × 8 by splitting 8 into 6 + 2. Show how you used both parts.

3.Use two different splits of 9 to work out 5 × 9. Show both calculations and check that they have the same total.

4.Select every expression that equals 3 × 8 by splitting 8 into two parts.

3 × (5 + 3)
(3 × 5) + (3 × 3)
(3 × 4) + (3 × 4)
(3 × 6) + 3

Use It in Problems

5.A box holds 3 green blocks and 5 yellow blocks. How many blocks are in 4 boxes? Write a multiplication sentence using a split, then find the total.

6.A path is 9 metres long: one part is 4 metres and the other is 5 metres. There are 3 equal paths. Find the combined length using a split multiplication sentence.

7.There are 5 gift bags. Each bag contains 2 small stickers, 4 round stickers and 3 star stickers. Find the total number of stickers using all three parts.

8.Work out 3 × (2 + 4 + 6) by multiplying 3 by each part, then adding the products.

9.In your own words, explain how splitting a number can help you multiply. Include a short example.
