What are integers? Integers are whole numbers and their negatives: ... -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3 ... They can show temperatures (°C), gains or losses, or positions on a number line.

How to add integers: - If the signs are the same, add the absolute values and keep the sign. - If the signs are different, subtract the smaller absolute value from the larger and take the sign of the larger absolute value.

How to subtract integers: Rewrite subtraction as adding the opposite. For example, a - b = a + (−b). Then use the rules for addition above.

Quick examples: - Example: (−3) + 5 = 2 because 5 is larger so 5 − 3 = 2 and the sign is positive. - Example: 4 − (−2) = 4 + 2 = 6 (subtracting a negative is adding).
