Lesson Procedure

1. Introduction and Review (10 minutes)

• Begin by gathering students in a circle or at their desks.
• Use the chart paper to quickly review important vocabulary and roles: Premier, MLA, Legislature, law-making.
• Ask a few recall questions to activate prior knowledge, e.g.,
  • “Who is the Premier of Alberta?”
  • “Where does the provincial government meet?”
  • “What happens when a new law is made?”
• Praise student contributions and clarify any misunderstandings.

2. Quiz Game Setup (5 minutes)

• Explain the quiz game rules: students will be split into 3 teams of 4.
• Each team will have a turn to answer a question from the quiz cards related to Alberta’s government.
• If the team answers correctly, they earn a point. If not, other teams can “steal” by raising their hand.
• Emphasize respectful listening and taking turns.
• Assign team names (e.g., “The Premiers,” “The Legislators,” “The Citizens”) to build excitement.

3. Quiz Game Activity (25 minutes)

• Conduct the quiz with timed turns (about 2 minutes per team) to maintain brisk pace.
