Specific Expectation: DL1.5 - Analyse different graphical representations of data including circle graphs, and describe key features and limitations of each representation.
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will:
- Understand how to read and interpret circle graphs (pie charts).
- Identify the components of a circle graph (e.g., sectors, percentages, labels).
- Critically analyse data presented in circle graphs by recognizing its advantages and limitations.
Materials Needed
- Projector or interactive whiteboard for displaying graphs.
- Printed worksheets (1 per student).
- Coloured pencils or markers.
- Scientific calculators.
- A clock or timer to monitor activity time.
Lesson Structure (30 minutes)
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
Teacher Prompt/Activity:
- Begin by asking students: "Have you ever seen a circle graph before? Can you think of examples where they are used in real life, such as in the news or advertisements?"
- Display a simple example of a circle graph (e.g., "Favourite Ice Cream Flavours" with sectors like chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry).
Discussion Questions:
- What can we learn by looking at this graph compared to other types, like a bar graph?
- Why might someone pick a circle graph to display data?
Key Terms (write on board):
- Sector, Percentage, Proportion, Total, Data Representation.
2. Guided Practice (10 minutes)
Step 1: How to Read a Circle Graph
- Briefly explain the components of a circle graph:
- Sectors (individual slices that represent data categories).
- Percentages (indicate the portion of the circle that each sector covers).
- Title and Labels (describe what the graph is about and the specific sections).
- Emphasise how all percentages in the graph add up to 100%.
Example Activity:
- Display a pre-made example on the board (e.g., A Family’s Weekly Expenses: Food: 40%, Rent: 30%, Entertainment: 20%, Travel: 10%).
- Ask questions:
- What category had the largest percentage?
- Which two categories combined make up half the circle?
Step 2: Limitations of Circle Graphs
- Discuss situations where circle graphs might not be the best representation (e.g., when there are too many categories or when the percentages are very similar).
3. Independent Practice (15 minutes)
Distribute the Worksheet: Analysing Circle Graphs. Students will work independently to:
PART A - Interpret a Circle Graph
A circle graph is provided on the worksheet with the following data:
Favourite Hobbies for 28 Students in Grade 8:
- Reading: 35%
- Sports: 25%
- Music: 20%
- Gaming: 10%
- Other: 10%
Questions include:
- Which hobby is most popular? By how much?
- How many students chose “Sports” as their favourite hobby? (Hint: Use 28 as the total number of students.)
- Two hobbies together account for 70% of the circle graph. Which two hobbies are they?
PART B - Critique a Circle Graph
A graph is presented with percentages that do not add up to 100%. Students must:
- Identify the error(s) in the graph.
- Explain why accurate percentages are important in a graph.
PART C - Challenge Question
Create Your Own Data Set:
- Choose 4-5 categories for a circle graph (e.g., favourite pizza toppings, movies, sports).
- Estimate the percentage for each category so the total equals 100%.
- Write down why this would or wouldn’t be a good data set for a circle graph.
4. Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
Quick Reflective Discussion:
- What are some strengths of representing data in a circle graph?
- What should we be careful about when interpreting data in this format?
Exit Ticket:
Before leaving, students must submit a sticky note with their answer to:
"Why do the percentages in a circle graph always need to add up to 100%?"
