Objectives

Materials Needed

• Animal Diets chart (prepared prior with columns for Carnivores, Herbivores, Omnivores)

Lesson Steps

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

• Engage Students: Begin with a short discussion on what animals eat. Ask questions like: "What does a lion eat? How about a rabbit?"
• Define Terms: Introduce key vocabulary: Carnivores, Herbivores, and Omnivores. Use simple definitions such as:
  • Carnivores: Animals that eat meat.
  • Herbivores: Animals that eat plants.
  • Omnivores: Animals that eat both plants and meat.

2. Group Activity (10 minutes)

• Classify Animals: Display the large Animal Diets chart.
• Interactive Sorting: Each student receives a picture of an animal. Have them take turns placing their picture in the correct category on the chart. Encourage them to explain their choice briefly.

3. Art Project (20 minutes)

• Create Animal Collages:
  • Step 1: Students choose an animal, think about its diet, and draw it on construction paper.
  • Step 2: Using magazines, students find and cut out pictures of the types of food their chosen animal eats.
  • Step 3: Students glue the food images around their animal drawing to create a collage that represents the animal’s diet.
  • Step 4: On a small label, students write or dictate a sentence about their animal and its diet, and attach it to their art piece.

4. Conclusion and Sharing (5 minutes)

• Gallery Walk: Display student art around the room. Allow students to walk around, observe, and appreciate each other's work.
• Discussion: Facilitate a short conversation about what they learned. Ask, "What did you notice about what different animals eat?"
