Building Soccer Skills

Curriculum Area

Physical Education – California State Standards (Grade 6)

  • Standard 1.10: Dribble a ball while preventing an opponent from stealing the ball.
  • Standard 1.12: Pass a ball to a stationary or moving teammate.
  • Standard 2.2: Explain the importance of open space in a team sport.
  • Standard 3.3: Participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity for extended periods.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will:

  1. Demonstrate basic dribbling and passing techniques.
  2. Develop quick decision-making skills related to spacing and movement.
  3. Engage in teamwork-based soccer activities.
  4. Improve cardiovascular endurance through continuous play.

Equipment Needed

  • 10 soccer balls (one per three students)
  • 25 cones (for dribbling drills)
  • 6 small pop-up goals
  • Pinnies for team identification

Lesson Structure (30 Minutes)

1. Warm-up (5 minutes)

Dynamic Movements:

  • 2 minutes: Light jogging around the field
  • 1 minute: High knees and leg swings
  • 1 minute: Arm circles and quick feet
  • 1 minute: Partner passing (short distance, controlling the ball before returning it)

Teacher's Prompt: "Think about how you receive the ball. Keep light on your feet!"

2. Skill Development (10 minutes)

Dribbling Drill (5 minutes)

  • Students work in pairs with one ball.
  • Dribble through a cone course, focusing on close control.
  • Emphasize inside and outside foot touches to maintain control.

Challenge: Add a defender to encourage shielding techniques and better ball control.

Passing & Space Awareness Drill (5 minutes)

  • Groups of three, passing the ball while jogging forward.
  • Encourage looking up before passing.
  • Highlight "finding the open space" and movement without the ball.

Teacher's Prompt: "Keep scanning the field – where is your teammate moving?"

3. Mini-Game (12 minutes)

4v4 Rotational Play (8 minutes active play, 2-minute discussion break)

  • Six teams play short games. If they score, they stay on the field; if not, they rotate with the next group.
  • Encourage spacing, passing, and team strategy discussions during the break.

Key Rule: 3-pass minimum before taking a shot to reinforce teamwork.

4. Cool-down & Reflection (3 minutes)

  • Slow jogging to walking to bring heart rate down.
  • Stretching (focus on legs and core).
  • Discussion Question: "What did you notice about movement and spacing today?"

Differentiation & Adaptations

For students needing extra support:

  • Allow them to dribble using fewer cones for a shorter course.
  • Pair them with a more experienced peer for passing drills.

For advanced students:

  • Introduce a time challenge for dribbling drills.
  • Allow two-touch passing only.

Assessment & Progress Check

  • Observation: Are students maintaining ball control during dribbling?
  • Questioning: Can students explain how spacing affects their passing options?
  • Self-Assessment: Thumbs up/down for confidence in dribbling and passing at the end of class.

Teacher Reflection

  • Were students engaged throughout the lesson?
  • Did they demonstrate improved decision-making in the mini-game?
  • Are there specific skills that need more focus in the next session?

This lesson balances skill development, gameplay, and physical activity, aligning with California PE Standards while keeping students engaged. 🚀
