Objective

Students will explore primary and secondary colours through a hands-on creative activity, fostering their understanding of colour mixing, expression, and creativity, aligning with California Visual Arts Standards for Grade 1.

Materials Needed

• Primary colour paints (red, blue, yellow)

Lesson Activities

Introduction - 3 minutes

1. Welcome and Setup: Greet students warmly. Ensure they are seated comfortably, wearing aprons, and have their materials ready.

2. Colour Introduction: Briefly introduce the primary colours (red, blue, yellow) and demonstrate how to make secondary colours (purple, green, orange) by mixing them. Use the paper plates to show small dabs of colour blending.

Main Activity - 12 minutes

1. Creative Paint-Mixing (5 minutes):

   • Instruct students to take a small amount of two primary colours on their paper plates.
   • Encourage them to mix these two colours using their paintbrush. Observe their colour transformations and share their discoveries with peers.

2. Art Creation: Rainbow Creatures (7 minutes):

   • Ask students to paint a picture of an imaginary creature, incorporating all the colours they created.
   • Encourage them to think about where their creature might live and what colours it might need for camouflage or to stand out, tapping into their creativity.

Conclusion and Sharing - 5 minutes

1. Group Share: Invite each student to share their painting with the class and talk briefly about their creature and the colours they used.
2. Reflection: Ask students whether mixing colours was surprising and which colours they liked best. Encourage them to think about how different colours make them feel.
3. Clean-Up: Assist students in cleaning up their area. Ensure all materials are put away properly, and hands are washed.

• Observe students during the activity to assess their engagement and ability to recognize and mix colours.
