Creative Halloween Masks

Lesson Overview

Objective

Students will design and create unique Halloween masks, exploring elements of design and symmetry in alignment with the California Visual Arts Content Standards for Grade 4. The lesson aims to foster creativity, problem-solving, and craftsmanship.

Lesson Structure (80 Minutes)

Materials

• Mask templates
• Scissors
• Paints (tiny amounts in placeholders)
• Paintbrushes
• Coloured paper
• Glue sticks
• Markers
• String for securing masks
• Hole puncher (located in the teacher's desk drawer)
• Sewing kits (for students finished with their masks)

Preparation

1. Arrange materials on the counter for easy access.
2. Pour a small amount of paint into each placeholder.
3. Ensure the environment is safe for creative work, with easy access to sinks for cleaning.

Lesson Activities

Introduction (10 Minutes)

• Discussion: Begin with a brief discussion on Halloween and the tradition of mask-wearing. Encourage students to share their favourite aspects of Halloween.
• Goal Setting: Explain the objective of creating a mask using various art materials. Highlight the connection between their cultural stories and mask design.

Creative Process (55 Minutes)

Designing the Mask (25 Minutes)

1. Brainstorming: Ask students to spend 5 minutes sketching their mask ideas on paper.
2. Template Selection: Allow students to choose a mask template and gather materials.
3. Painting: Students carefully paint their mask design using the limited paint provided.
   • Encourage creativity in colour use and design pattern, reminding them of symmetry and artistic balance.
4. Cutting & Assembling: Once the paint is dry, use scissors to cut out additional decorative shapes, and glue them onto the mask.

Completing the Project (30 Minutes)

• String Attachment: Show students how to use the hole puncher to create holes on the sides of the mask. Guide them to thread the string through these holes to make the mask wearable.
• Class Sharing & Feedback: Once complete, host a mini exhibition where students display their masks and give positive peer feedback.

Extension Activity (for those finished early)

• Sewing Project: Direct students who finish their masks early to continue working on their sewing project, enhancing fine motor skills and planning.

Conclusion (15 Minutes)

• Reflection: Gather the class to reflect on the artistic process and challenges faced while creating their masks. Discuss what they learned about using different materials and design elements.
• Clean-Up: Guide students to carefully put away their materials and clean their working areas.
