Creative Story Time

Introduction (5 minutes)

Objective

Foster creativity and comprehension by engaging students in an interactive story creation session.

Standards

California Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts:

• RF.1.1: Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
• RL.1.2: Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.
• SL.1.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• A large picture book with vivid images (suggested: "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak)
• A "story dice" (homemade or purchased)
• Paper and crayons for each student

Warm-Up Activity (10 minutes)

Engaging the Students

1. Picture Book Reading:

   • Gather the students in a semi-circle.
   • Read aloud "Where the Wild Things Are," pausing to show illustrations.
   • Ask prompting questions about the story and illustrations:
     • What do you think will happen next?
     • How do you think Max is feeling?

2. Interactive Discussion:

   • Encourage students to describe their favourite part of the story and why.
   • Introduce the concept of setting, characters, and plot briefly.

Main Activity (15 minutes)

Create-A-Story

1. Introduce Story Dice:

   • Explain to the students that the story dice will help them create their very own unique story.
   • Demonstrate rolling the dice, showing how each face can represent different elements (e.g., characters, settings, actions).

2. Group Story Creation:

   • Roll the dice as a class to determine the setting, character, and main action for the story.
   • As a class, brainstorm and create a beginning, middle, and end for the story.
   • Write the story on the whiteboard with contributions from the students.

3. Illustrate the Story:

   • Distribute paper and crayons.
   • Assign different parts of the story to each student to illustrate.
   • Allow 5-7 minutes for students to draw their favourite scenes.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

Sharing and Reinforcement

1. Story Sharing:

   • Allow each student to show their drawing and explain their part of the story.
   • Summarise the whole story together, showing the drawings in sequence.

2. Reflection:

   • Ask students what they liked about making their own story.
   • Reinforce the learning points about setting, characters, and plot.
   • Encourage students to think about stories they might want to create at home.

Follow-Up Activity

Homework

• Ask students to use the story dice at home with their families to create another story.
• Encourage them to bring their new stories to school to share with the class.

Evaluation

• Observe students’ participation and engagement during the group story creation and discussion.
• Review the story illustrations for comprehension of the story’s sequence and elements.

Notes

• Adjust the activity timeframe if necessary to match student engagement levels.
• Be prepared with additional prompts or a backup picture book in case of time constraints or differing student interest.
