Overview

This 60-minute lesson engages 1st graders in exploring Cree language and culture through three interactive learning centres. The centres highlight important Cree words, link words to images of culturally significant animals, plants, and items, and encourage cultural connection through puzzles illustrating Cree stories and landscapes. Materials Needed

• Writing centre:

  • Large writing mats or slates
  • Visual cards featuring Cree words with English translations and phonetic pronunciation
  • Crayons, markers, or pencils

• Matching game centre:

  • 2 sets of cards (Cree words / corresponding pictures of animals, plants, traditional items such as moccasins, tipi, or drum)
    -/Table or rug space for spreading cards

• Puzzle centre:

  • Custom jigsaw puzzles (12-16 pieces) depicting Cree stories (e.g., the Crane and the Loon tale) or landscapes from the Cree traditional territories
  • Puzzle boards or flat surfaces

Lesson Procedure

Introduction (10 mins)

1. Gather students in a circle for a brief talk.
2. Introduce the Cree people and their importance as one of the many Indigenous groups in Canada, acknowledging the importance of Indigenous languages and stories.
3. Explain the three centres they will explore and discuss safety and sharing rules.
4. Use a shared big picture or visual of a Cree landscape or cultural marker to spark curiosity.

Independent & Rotational Activities (40 mins)

Centre 1: Writing Cree Words (15 minutes)

• Students work individually or in pairs.
• Each student receives a card with a Cree word (e.g., maskwa - bear, mîkis - eagle, nipiy - water).
• Using visual aids and phonetic guides, students practice writing these words while listening to the correct pronunciation.
• Encourage students to draw a simple picture beside the word to reinforce meaning.
• Teacher circulates, modelling writing strokes and pronunciation, providing positive feedback.

Centre 2: Matching Game (15 minutes)

• Students play a memory matching game with cards laid face down.
• Cards are either Cree words or images (animals like maskwa bear; plants like pimî berry; items like mîkisîw eagle feather).
• At each turn, students try to find the matching word and image pairs.
• After matching, students say the word aloud together; teacher guides pronunciation and discusses cultural significance of animals/plants/items.

Centre 3: Cree Story Puzzles (10 minutes)

• Small groups of 3-4 students assemble puzzles depicting scenes from Cree stories or landscapes.
• After completion, the teacher briefly tells or reads the associated story, emphasizing cultural values within the tale (e.g., respect for nature).
• Invite students to share what they notice or like about the puzzle images.
• Encourage students to use some Cree words learned at the other centres to describe puzzle scenes.

Conclusion and Reflection (10 mins)

• Regroup as a whole class.
• Ask guided reflective questions:
  • What new Cree word did you like best?
  • What did you learn about the Cree people’s relationship with nature?
  • How do the stories and words help us understand their culture better?
• Celebrate the efforts with a quick “Cree word chant” where the class repeats a list of learned words together.
