Overview

This lesson plan is designed for 4th Grade students in Indigenous Studies, aligning with the California Education Standards for Social Science. Specifically, it aims to help students explore Indigenous art and culture through the creation of a Halloween mask.

Lesson Breakdown (80 minutes)

Introduction (10 minutes)

• Discussion: Begin with a brief discussion on the role of masks in Indigenous cultures. Explain that masks have been used in storytelling, ceremonies, and celebrations.

Mask Creation (35 minutes)

1. Set-Up (5 minutes):

   • Ensure students know where the art supplies are.
   • Demonstrate how to pour a small amount of paint into placeholders.
   • Show safe usage of the hole puncher if needed.

2. Activity (30 minutes):

   • Students will work on decorating their masks. Encourage creativity and discuss traditional designs if they need inspiration.

Teacher Tip: Walk around to provide feedback and assist students who might need help using the materials.

Transition to Sewing (5 minutes)

• Instructions: Explain that students who have completed their masks can work on their sewing projects. Mention the available sewing resources and ensure they understand project expectations.

Sewing Project (25 minutes)

  • Students begin or continue their sewing projects. Ensure projects link to Indigenous cultural themes, like creating small pouches inspired by traditional patterns.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

• Review: Discuss what students learned about Indigenous cultures through today’s mask-making and sewing.
• Share: Allow a few students to share their mask designs or describe their sewing project and its cultural significance.

• Research Project: Encourage students to explore a specific Indigenous culture and make a short presentation.
