Overview

Students explore the idea that God created light out of darkness and formed the sky, using a brief “lights on” demonstration and a structured discussion. They then express their learning through a simple art contrast activity and a short scripture reflection in a cloud-bordered journal.

Learning intentions

Students will identify light and darkness and describe what changes when light turns on.
Students will share ideas about why God made light first, using a sentence starter.
Students will use art to show contrast: darkness vs light.
Students will record a personal reflection about God’s creation.

Lesson structure (7 total minutes)

1 min – Set the room for “darkness” Dim or turn off classroom lights so it feels noticeably dark. Tell students: “We’re going to notice what changes when light comes.”
1 min – Scripture focus with quick story Read Genesis 1:1–3 aloud: “In the beginning… God created the heavens and the earth… God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” Keep it short and age-appropriate.
1 min – “Turn on” demonstration Turn on a central light source. Ask one question: “How does it feel when the lights suddenly turn on?” Provide two options they can point to or choose: “bright/exciting/scary/calm.”
1 min – Discussion: why light first Ask: “Why do you think God made light first?” Offer a sentence starter on the board: “I think God made light first because ______.” Invite 2–3 students to share.
2 min – Worksheets: Contrast Art Give students the dual-sided contrast page. Students do “Darkness” on the black canvas with charcoal pencil, then “Light” on white paper with vibrant neon pastels (or the reverse if space is limited). Emphasise: “Fill the whole side—show the difference.”
1 min – Worksheet: Sky Verse Journal (quick entry) Students complete the cloud-bordered “Sky Verse Journal” with a simple reflection sentence starter: “God’s creation is ______.” Allow drawing if writing is hard. Teacher circulates and supports.
1 min – Wrap-up and next-step cue Teacher summarises: “God brought light out of darkness, and He formed the sky.” Collect pages gently and tell students they will finish Day 2 activities (craft and game) next.

Differentiation

Support: Provide picture choices (happy/scared/calm; bright/dim) and a highlighted sentence starter line to copy or complete with one word.
Support: Offer a “scribe option” where the student dictates and the teacher writes a short phrase.
EAL: Use gestures and point-to-choice cards; allow answers with one-word responses (e.g., “bright,” “calm,” “because” + one reason).
Extension: Invite students to add one extra detail in the journal: “God’s light helps me feel ______.”

Lesson 1 worksheets guidance (Days 1 & 2)

Day 1 (this 7-minute plan): Complete Contrast Art and start the Sky Verse Journal with the starter sentence/drawing; complete discussion and quick wrap-up.
Day 2 (for the unit worksheet set): Students continue the journal (second short reflection) and complete the matching “Creation Foundations” activity page set (age-appropriate copywork, fill-in-the-blanks, or a small word search) as time allows.
