Objectives

• Students will be able to identify and describe patterns using size, shape, and colour.
• Students will create their own patterns and predict the next sequence.

Materials

• Worksheet on patterning with size, shape, and colour
• Colourful blocks or counters
• Coloured pencils or markers
• Whiteboard and markers

Lesson Plan

Introduction (5 minutes)

1. Greeting and Settling In

   • Welcome the students and have them gathered around the teaching area.
   • Briefly discuss what patterns are: sequences that repeat in a regular way.

2. Objective Sharing

   • "Today, we're going to be pattern detectives! We'll look for patterns and create some colourful, exciting ones using size, shape, and colour."

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

1. Pattern Examples

   • Use the whiteboard to draw simple patterns using shapes and colours (e.g., red circle, blue square, red circle, blue square).
   • Discuss how patterns can change by size, shape, and colour.

2. Interactive Pattern Recognition

   • Show students a pattern using physical objects (blocks/counters) and ask if they can spot the pattern.
   • Ask students, "What comes next?" and have them justify their answers.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

1. Partner Pattern Task

   • Divide the students into pairs.
   • Give each pair a set of blocks/counters.
   • Instruct each pair to create a pattern using size, shape, and colour.
   • Each pair will then swap patterns with another pair and predict the next part of each other's pattern.

2. Worksheet Completion

   • Hand out the patterning worksheet.
   • Explain that they'll be looking for patterns and creating their own as part of the worksheet tasks.
   • Monitor the students as they work, offering guidance and support.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

1. Sharing and Reflecting

   • Ask each student to share one pattern they discovered or created and describe the sequence.
   • Discuss what they found easy or challenging about identifying and creating patterns.

2. Closing Circle

   • Gather students in a circle.
   • review the main points: spotting and creating patterns using size, shape, and colour.

Assessment

• Observe students as they work to gauge their understanding and ability to create patterns.
• Review completed worksheets to ensure students can identify and extend patterns.

Differentiation

• For students needing additional support, work with simpler patterns and provide one-on-one guidance.
• Challenge advanced students by introducing more complex patterns with additional elements or longer sequences.
