Objectives

Introduction (5 Minutes)

1. Greeting and Objectives Introduction

   • Welcome the students and introduce the day's exciting activity: learning about the recorder.
   • Explain that by the end of the lesson, they'll be able to play simple notes on the recorder using finger positions.

2. Historical Context Briefing

   • Share a brief history of the recorder as an instrument. Highlight its use in medieval and Renaissance music, emphasizing its accessibility and importance in learning music.

Demonstration (10 Minutes)

1. Instrument Handling and Sound Production

   • Demonstrate how to properly hold the recorder, focusing on posture and hand positions.
   • Practice with students on blowing gently into the recorder to produce sound without squeaking.

2. Finger Position Introduction

   • Using the illustrated cards, show finger positions for the notes B, A, G.
   • Students will take turns echoing the teacher’s demonstration for each note.

Practice Session (15 Minutes)

   • Distribute illustrated finger position cards and allow students to try positioning their fingers on their recorders following each card.
   • Allow students to practice playing notes B, A, and G sequentially.

2. Collaborative Activity

   • Pair up students and have them take turns guiding each other on the correct finger positioning.
   • Encourage students to help each other correct their hand placements and sound control.

Reading Music (10 Minutes)

1. Introduction to Music Notes on Staff

   • Show cards with notes B, A, and G displayed on a staff.
   • Relate each note on the staff with the corresponding finger positions on the recorder.

2. Interactive Matching Game

   • Use a matching activity where students match the note card on the staff with the finger positioning card.
   • Encourage students to play the matched note on their recorder.

Assessment and Conclusion (5 Minutes)

1. Question and Answer Structure

   • Conduct a quick verbal quiz with varying levels of difficulty for students to retain knowledge.
   • Simple Questions:
     • What is the thumb’s role when playing the recorder?
     • How do you produce sound on the recorder without squeaking?
     • Can you show me the position for note B?
   • Medium Questions:
     • How do you read note A on the staff?
     • What adjustments need to be made to transition from note G to A?
   • Difficult Questions:
     • Describe step-by-step how to play the note G and match it with its notation on the staff.
     • What historical era was the recorder prominently used, and why do you think it was popular?

2. Feedback and Encouragement

   • Provide feedback on students’ performances, highlighting areas of improvement and commendations for effort. Encourage practice at home.
