Lesson Overview

In this lesson, students will explore the economic impacts of international trade on Canada, identifying positive and negative effects. Lesson Procedures

• Explain that students will split into “expert groups” (4 groups for 4 impact categories) for in-depth study. Each group receives a different economic impact category:

3. Effects on Canada’s GDP and trade balance
4. Impacts of tariffs, trade agreements, and global economic fluctuations

• Provide handouts with guiding questions, key facts, and graphic organizers specific to each category.

3. Expert Group Research and Discussion (20 minutes)

• Students work in expert groups to investigate their assigned economic impact.
• Encourage use of textbooks, pre-selected articles, and relevant online resources (if available).
• Students fill in graphic organizers and prepare a 5-minute presentation to teach their peers.

4. Jigsaw Teaching Groups (25 minutes)

• Reorganize students into new groups so each student represents a different economic impact category.
• Each student takes turns teaching their topic to peers, supported by their notes and completed graphic organizers.
